Best Buffer Alternatives in 2026: 8 Tools Compared

What's the best Buffer alternative? Postprism is the best Buffer alternative in 2026: it publishes to 6 networks with a native version of every post for $19 a month flat, so one brand on all 6 networks costs $19 instead of the $30 Buffer Essentials charges at $5 per channel, and its MCP server for AI agents is on every plan. Hootsuite and Sprout Social suit larger teams that need an inbox and listening, Later suits Instagram-first visual planning, SocialPilot and Agorapulse suit agencies, Publer suits budget creators who want a free plan, and Metricool suits analytics-led marketers.

Buffer has earned its reputation. It is clean, it is quick to learn, and its free plan is genuinely useful for someone posting to two or three channels. People start looking for a Buffer alternative for practical reasons: Buffer prices every connected channel separately, approvals only arrive on the Team plan, and YouTube support is listed for Shorts only. If you are weighing just the two products, our head-to-head page, Postprism vs Buffer, covers that comparison in detail. This guide looks wider, ranking eight tools on cost at real channel counts, network coverage, AI writing and agent access, with every competitor price checked on the vendor's own page in October 2026.

Why Postprism is the Buffer alternative to pick

  • Flat pricing that does not count channels. Solo is $19 a month ($14 billed yearly), Freelancer $49 and Agency $99, with unlimited posts on every plan. Plans are set by brands (workspaces) and team members, not by channel count: one brand on all 6 networks is $19, three brands are $49 and ten are $99. That is the opposite of Buffer's per-channel model. See pricing.
  • A native version for every network in one request. Write once, click Enhance with AI, and Postprism returns a separate, editable version for every network you selected: a fuller LinkedIn post, a short X post, a TikTok caption. Plans include 150, 500 or 2,000 AI adaptations a month. See AI content adaptation.
  • Your AI agent can run it via MCP, on every plan. Postprism's hosted MCP server gives Claude, ChatGPT, Cursor and other MCP clients 11 tools to list accounts, draft, schedule, edit and report on posts. Posts an agent creates without a date wait as drafts on your calendar. See AI agents.
  • Bulk scheduling on every plan. Bulk Upload takes a CSV with content, scheduled_at and an optional media_url, up to 200 rows and 2 MB per file, and the AI Scheduling Assistant turns a description or a spreadsheet into a schedule. See bulk scheduling.

Key findings

  • Buffer charges per channel. Buffer's pricing page lists Essentials at $5 a month per channel ($60 per channel billed yearly) and Team at $10 a month per channel ($120 billed yearly), with a lower per-channel price above 10 channels.
  • Buffer's free plan is real. It covers up to 3 channels, 10 scheduled posts per channel and 1 user, with the AI Assistant and 1 API key at 3,000 requests a month included.
  • Approvals cost double on Buffer. Essentials has no approval workflows; Team adds them along with unlimited users, at twice the per-channel price.
  • Agent access is spreading, unevenly. Buffer has an official remote MCP server, SocialPilot and Agorapulse list MCP on every plan, Metricool lists it on its free plan, Publer lists it on Business, and Hootsuite lists four MCP servers, including one for publishing, without saying which plans include them.
  • Per-seat suites cost the most. Hootsuite starts at $99 per user a month billed annually and Sprout Social at $79 per seat a month billed annually.
  • Postprism stays at $19 for one brand on any or all of its 6 networks, and moves to $49 or $99 only when you add brands, client workspaces or team members.

What Buffer costs at 3, 5, 10 and 20 channels, against Postprism and the rest

Per-channel, per-profile, per-seat and flat pricing behave very differently as you add accounts. The table shows the lowest plan on each vendor's page that covers the channel count for one user, at the monthly list price. Where the vendor only shows a yearly-billed price, the figure is the yearly price per month and says so. All competitor prices were checked October 2026 and link to the vendor's pricing page.

Where Buffer is cheaper, plainly: for one to three channels, Buffer's free plan costs nothing and Essentials costs $5 to $15 a month, which is less than Postprism Solo's $19 monthly price (Solo billed yearly is $14). If you want approvals and only have three or four channels, Buffer Team at $30 to $40 is also less than Postprism Freelancer at $49. From five channels up, the maths flips: Buffer Essentials reaches $25 at 5 channels and $30 for one brand on 6 networks, while Postprism stays at $19. At 10 channels across a few brands, Postprism Freelancer ($49) and Buffer Essentials ($50) cost about the same, but Freelancer includes approvals and 3 team members, which on Buffer means Team at $100. At 20 channels, Freelancer is still $49 against up to $100 on Essentials and up to $200 on Team.

Two tools do not fit the per-channel grid. Metricool prices by brand rather than by channel (checked October 2026): one brand is free with 20 posts a month and no LinkedIn or X, Starter is from $20 a month billed yearly for up to 5 brands, and Advanced is from $53 a month billed yearly for up to 15 brands. Publer starts at $5 a month for 1 social account on Professional and $10 on Business, with the total for more accounts shown in its pricing calculator, and every 10th account free (checked October 2026).

How we ranked these Buffer alternatives

Every tool was judged on the same five questions, using each vendor's own pricing and help pages in October 2026. We weighted the first two most heavily, because they are why people leave Buffer.

What Buffer does well, and where it gets harder

Before the list, it is worth being clear about Buffer's strengths, because they are real. Its free plan covers 3 channels, it publishes to an unusually wide set of destinations, and its tools are easy to learn.

  • Wide channel list. Buffer's supported channels are Facebook Pages (Groups via notification), Instagram business and creator accounts, X, LinkedIn Pages and profiles, Pinterest, TikTok, Google Business Profiles, Start Page, Mastodon, YouTube Shorts, Threads, Bluesky and Substack Notes.
  • Bulk upload on every plan. Buffer's bulk upload works on Free (up to 10 posts per channel per upload) and paid plans (up to 100), though not for YouTube.
  • A free AI Assistant. Buffer's AI Assistant brainstorms, rewrites and crafts platform-specific posts, and is free to use.
  • An official MCP server. Buffer's Claude integration page describes a remote MCP server at mcp.buffer.com/mcp for drafting posts, reviewing the queue and scheduling from Claude. The page does not say which plans include it.

Where it gets harder is the shape of the bill and the shape of the work. Each channel adds $5 or $10 a month, approvals and more than one user mean Team pricing, and the AI Assistant optimises one post at a time for a network rather than giving every selected network its own version in one step. Those are the gaps the tools below fill in different ways.

1. Postprism: For anyone who wants native posts on every network at a flat price

Postprism is a social media scheduler that publishes to X, LinkedIn, TikTok, YouTube, Bluesky and Pinterest from one calendar. Its idea is simple: write once, publish natively on every platform, and let your AI agent run it via MCP if you want. Each post holds a separate, editable version for every network you pick, so you never have to send the same caption everywhere. For the direct comparison, read Postprism vs Buffer.

What it publishes on each network

XPosts with up to 4 images

TikTokVideo and photo posts, published directly or sent to the inbox as a draft

Agency$99$75/month10 and 102,000Approvals, REST API, analytics CSV export

Every plan starts with a 7-day free trial.

Why Buffer users pick it

  • Enhance with AI. One click returns a version of your post for every selected network, shaped to each one's length and style. Anything over a network's limit turns red so you can edit it, and nothing is trimmed without you seeing it.
  • Brand identity. The AI writes with your saved brand name, industry, tone, values, audience and key messages, so drafts sound like you from the start. See brand voice.
  • Calendar and kanban. Month, week and day views with a platform filter, a kanban board with Drafts, Scheduled and Published columns, and a Generate content plan button that builds a 4-week plan.
  • Agents. The hosted MCP server's 11 tools cover posts, media, analytics, platforms and workspaces. Claude and ChatGPT setup guides walk through connecting in a few minutes.
  • Clients and approvals. Freelancer and Agency give each client a workspace, with Owner, Admin, Editor and read-only Viewer roles, and an approval step where Owners and Admins approve or request changes.
  • Time zones per post. Set the time zone when you schedule, so a client in another region publishes at their local time.

Choose Postprism if you post to more than four channels, want each network to get its own version without rewriting by hand, or want an AI agent to draft and schedule into a calendar you review. Start a 7-day free trial.

2. Hootsuite: For larger teams that need an inbox and listening

Hootsuite's plans page (checked October 2026) says paid plans start at $99 for Standard, $199 for Professional and up to $399 for Advanced, priced per user a month and based on annual billing. Standard covers up to 10 social accounts; Professional and Advanced cover unlimited accounts. You can buy as many user seats as you need, and each plan has a 14-day free trial.

  • AI: every plan runs on Wisdom, Hootsuite's AI, with 100 AI credits a month on Standard, Professional and Advanced. AI caption enhancements, a content and ideas generator and hashtag suggestions are on every plan; AI smart replies start at Professional.
  • Approvals: content approval workflows are part of Advanced.
  • Bulk: Bulk Composer schedules up to 350 posts at once from a CSV file, though bulk scheduling is not available during the trial.
  • Agents: Hootsuite's MCP page lists four servers: Perch for drafting, scheduling and publishing, Nest for the inbox, Lumen for listening and Parliament for employee advocacy. It does not say which plans include them.
  • Networks: Hootsuite's FAQ lists Facebook, Instagram, X, LinkedIn, TikTok, YouTube, Threads, WhatsApp and Pinterest.

Choose Hootsuite if customer care, a shared inbox and listening matter as much as publishing, and the budget is per seat. For one person posting to 10 channels, it costs about twice Buffer Essentials or Postprism Freelancer. Compare it with Postprism on our Hootsuite alternative page, or read Buffer vs Hootsuite.

3. Later: For Instagram-first visual planning

Later's pricing page (checked October 2026) shows plans billed yearly: Starter at $18.75 a month with 1 social set (8 profiles, 1 of each network) and 1 user, Growth at $37.50 with 2 social sets (16 profiles) and 2 users, and Scale at $82.50 with 6 social sets (48 profiles) and 4 users. Each has a 14-day free trial, and yearly billing saves 25%.

  • Post limits: Starter schedules up to 30 posts per profile, Growth up to 180, and Scale is unlimited.
  • AI: 5, 50 or 100 AI credits a month for Caption Writer and Ideas; one credit makes 3 ideas or 1 caption.
  • Collaboration: internal and external approvals and a social inbox start at Growth.
  • Add-ons: on Growth and Scale, an extra social set is $11.25 a month, an extra user $3.75, and 100 extra AI credits $3.75.
  • Networks: the page says Later supports Instagram, Facebook, TikTok, Threads, YouTube, Pinterest, LinkedIn and Snapchat.
  • Agents: its pricing page does not list an MCP server or an API.

Choose Later if Instagram and TikTok are the centre of your plan and you want a visual-first workflow with link in bio. The social set model is cheap when you have one profile per network, and less so when one brand runs several Pages. See our Later alternative page or Later vs Buffer.

4. Sprout Social: For enterprise social teams

Sprout Social's pricing page (checked October 2026) lists Essentials at $79 per seat a month billed annually ($99 billed monthly) with 5 social profiles, Standard at $199 per seat with 5 profiles, Professional at $299 with unlimited profiles and Advanced at $399 with unlimited profiles. The free trial runs 30 days.

  • AI: Trellis, Sprout's AI agent, comes with 100 AI agent credits per seat a month. Enhance Post by AI Assist starts at Professional.
  • API: the Sprout API and Helpdesk integrations are on Advanced. The pricing page does not list an MCP server.
  • Networks: its integrations list includes Facebook, X, Instagram, LinkedIn, Threads, Pinterest and TikTok.
  • Listening: listening is an add-on.

Choose Sprout Social if you are a larger company that needs governance, reporting and listening, and seat pricing fits the budget. A three-person team on Professional is $897 a month billed annually. See our Sprout Social alternative page.

5. SocialPilot: For agencies on a budget

SocialPilot's plans page (checked October 2026) lists four plans, each with a 14-day free trial and 15% off when billed yearly:

PlanMonthlyBilled yearlyAccountsUsersAI credits
Essentials$30$25.50/month71500
Standard$50$42.50/month1531,000
Premium$100$85/month2565,000
Ultimate$200$170/month50UnlimitedUnlimited
  • Extra accounts are $4 a month each on every plan, and extra users $5 from Standard.
  • Approvals: manager approval from Standard; client management and client approval from Premium.
  • Bulk: bulk scheduling and CSV uploads start at Premium.
  • Agents: the plan table lists MCP Server Integration on every plan, for Claude, ChatGPT, Perplexity, Cursor and other AI platforms. API access is on Enterprise.
  • Networks: Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, X, LinkedIn, Threads, Bluesky, YouTube, Pinterest and Google Business.

Choose SocialPilot if you run an agency with many accounts and want white-label reports and client approvals. Note that bulk upload, which is on every Buffer and Postprism plan, starts at SocialPilot's $100 Premium plan. See our SocialPilot alternative page.

6. Publer: For budget creators who want a free plan

Publer's plans and pricing article (checked October 2026, last updated 15 September 2026) lists Professional from $5 a month for 1 social account and Business from $10 a month for 1 account, with every 10th social account or member free and 20% off when billed yearly. Publer's plans page shows the live total as you add accounts.

  • Free plan: 1 user, 1 workspace, 3 social accounts (not X), 10 scheduled posts per account at a time and 25 saved drafts.
  • AI and analytics: Business adds unlimited AI prompts, analytics, best times to post and competitor analysis.
  • Agents: API and MCP access are on Business for eligible customers, and on Enterprise.
  • Approvals: approval workflows are on Business.
  • Networks: Facebook, Instagram, Pinterest, Threads, LinkedIn, Bluesky, Google Business, Mastodon, X, Telegram, YouTube, WordPress and TikTok.

Choose Publer if you want a free plan without Buffer's channel cap mattering, or a per-account price that starts very low. Per-account pricing still rises as you add accounts, so price your real count in its calculator. See our Publer alternative page.

7. Metricool: For analytics-led marketers

Metricool's pricing page (checked October 2026) prices by brand, where a brand is all of one company's social profiles.

PlanBilled yearlyBilled monthlyBrands
Free$0$01 brand, 20 posts a month, no LinkedIn or X
StarterFrom $20/monthFrom $25/monthUp to 5 brands ($36 yearly-billed for up to 10)
AdvancedFrom $53/monthFrom $67/monthUp to 15 brands ($85 for 25, $159 for 50)
  • Agents: Metricool MCP is listed on the free plan; the Metricool API (Zapier, Make) is on Advanced.
  • Teams: team and client management, roles and the post approval system are on Advanced.
  • X: X publishing needs an add-on from Starter.
  • Networks: Instagram, TikTok, YouTube, Threads, X, Twitch, Google Business Profile, Bluesky, Facebook, Pinterest and LinkedIn.

Choose Metricool if reporting and competitor analysis are your main deliverable and you manage several small brands. See our Metricool alternative page.

8. Agorapulse: For inbox-heavy agencies and brands

Agorapulse's pricing page (checked October 2026) lists Standard at $79 per user a month billed annually ($99 monthly), Professional at $119 ($149) and Advanced at $149 ($199), each with 10 social profiles and extra profiles at $10 a month billed annually ($15 monthly). The free trial runs 30 days.

  • Inbox: every plan manages messages and organic comments from one inbox.
  • Approvals and bulk: simple one-step approval workflows start at Professional; bulk scheduling of up to 200 posts from a CSV starts at Advanced.
  • Agents: Agorapulse's MCP connector for Claude, ChatGPT and Copilot is in beta on every plan except Legacy; it creates draft posts and reads inbox, listening and analytics data, but does not publish. API integration is on Custom.
  • Networks: Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn pages and profiles, TikTok, X, YouTube, Threads, Pinterest, Bluesky and Google Business count toward the profile limit.

Choose Agorapulse if replying to comments and DMs is the main job and per-user pricing suits the team. See our Agorapulse alternative page.

How to choose a Buffer alternative

Start from what you post and who touches it, not from a feature list. Five questions settle most decisions.

  1. How many channels will you have in 12 months? Count every profile, Page and account, then price that number in each tool. Per-channel and per-profile pricing look cheap at three and expensive at fifteen.
  2. Who else needs to see or approve posts? If a client or manager signs off, check which plan unlocks approvals. On Buffer it is Team, on Postprism Freelancer, on Hootsuite Advanced, on Agorapulse Professional.
  3. Do you want each network to get its own post? If your LinkedIn, X and Instagram audiences want different things, a tool that creates a version per network in one step saves the most time.
  4. Will an AI agent do part of the work? Decide whether the agent drafts for review or publishes directly, then check where MCP sits on each tool's plans.
  5. Which networks earn results? Make sure the formats you rely on, such as full YouTube videos, Instagram carousels or TikTok photo posts, are covered.

Why people switch from Buffer

The bill grows with every channel

Buffer's per-channel model is fair at small sizes, and that is why so many people start there. It becomes the reason they leave once a brand adds a TikTok, a second LinkedIn Page and a Bluesky account. A brand on 6 networks pays $30 a month on Essentials and $60 on Team. On Postprism, the same brand pays $19.

Approvals mean a pricier plan

Essentials has no approval workflows. The moment a client or a manager needs to sign off, every channel moves to the $10 Team rate. Postprism's approvals start at $49 a month for 3 workspaces, whatever the channel count.

One post at a time, network by network

Buffer's AI Assistant can optimise a post for LinkedIn, Threads, X, Instagram and Bluesky. The difference in Postprism is the workflow: one click on Enhance with AI returns a version for every network you selected in a single request, each editable side by side, with over-limit text flagged in red.

Full YouTube videos

Buffer's supported channels list YouTube Shorts. Creators who publish long-form video want title, tags, privacy, playlist and thumbnail set at upload, which Postprism handles as part of the same post.

Agents that work inside a reviewed calendar

Buffer's MCP server lets Claude draft and schedule, which is a real strength. Postprism's MCP server is on every plan, works across workspaces for agencies, and keeps any post without a date as a draft for a person to review, so an agent can do the first pass while a human keeps control. Our guide to the best schedulers for AI agents compares this across the market.

A worked example: two brands, 12 channels

Consider Harbour Coffee, a fictional café group. The café brand posts to TikTok, LinkedIn, X, Pinterest, YouTube and Bluesky. Its new roastery is a separate brand with its own TikTok, LinkedIn, X, Pinterest, YouTube and Bluesky accounts. That is 12 channels across two brands. One marketer writes everything, and the owner wants to see posts before they go out.

  • Buffer Essentials: 12 channels at $5 is at most $60 a month, with volume pricing above 10, and no approval step.
  • Buffer Team: 12 channels at $10 is at most $120 a month, with approvals.
  • Postprism Freelancer: $49 a month ($36 billed yearly), with each brand in its own workspace, the owner approving in the Approvals queue, and a third workspace free for the next brand.

The saving is real, but the bigger change is the work. Instead of writing a caption and adjusting it for each network, the marketer writes once, clicks Enhance with AI and gets a TikTok caption, a LinkedIn hiring post, a short X post and the rest, each ready to edit.

How to switch from Buffer to Postprism

A clean switch takes an afternoon for one brand. Keep two weeks queued in Buffer while you set up, so nothing goes quiet during the move.

  1. Export your upcoming posts. Put the next four weeks of your Buffer queue into a spreadsheet with three columns: content, scheduled_at and, where a post has an image or video, media_url.
  2. Start the trial and create workspaces. Sign up, then create one workspace per brand or client before connecting anything.
  3. Connect your networks. Connect X, LinkedIn, TikTok, YouTube, Bluesky and Pinterest accounts in each workspace.
  4. Set up your brand identity. Add your industry, tone, values, audience and key messages so Enhance with AI writes in your voice.
  5. Bulk Upload the CSV. Save the spreadsheet as CSV (up to 200 rows and 2 MB per file, on every plan), choose the platforms for the upload and check the preview. Split larger queues into several files. For XLSX or JSON, or files in Google Drive or Dropbox, use the AI Scheduling Assistant instead.
  6. Add per-network versions. Open your most important posts and click Enhance with AI to give each network its own version.
  7. Reconnect your agents. If Claude or ChatGPT drafted into Buffer, connect them to Postprism's MCP server and ask for one week of drafts to test.
  8. Pause, then cancel. Pause Buffer's queue before your first Postprism post goes out, then cancel once a full week has published.

Our guide to bulk scheduling tools covers spreadsheet formats in more depth.

Common mistakes when leaving Buffer

  1. Comparing entry prices only. Price your real channel count and team size in 12 months.
  2. Forgetting approvals. If anyone signs off today by email or chat, choose a plan with an approval step.
  3. Running two queues. Pause the old queue the day the new one starts, or posts go out twice.
  4. Skipping weeks during the move. Keep two weeks queued in the old tool until the new one is publishing.
  5. Sending one caption everywhere. A switch is the moment to give each network its own version; our post on whether cross-posting hurts reach explains why it matters.
  6. Letting an agent publish unreviewed. Have agents create drafts first, then review them on the calendar.

The verdict

Buffer is a good tool for one person on a few channels, and its free plan is hard to beat at that size. Once you pass four channels, need approvals or want each network to get its own post, Postprism is the best Buffer alternative: $19 a month flat for 6 networks, a native version of every post from one click of Enhance with AI, Bulk Upload and an MCP server for AI agents on every plan, and client workspaces with approvals from $49. Choose Hootsuite or Sprout Social for enterprise inbox and listening, Later for Instagram-first planning, SocialPilot or Agorapulse for agency suites, Publer for a low-cost free start and Metricool for analytics. For the two-way comparison, read Postprism vs Buffer.

Postprism is the best Buffer alternative for most people in 2026. It publishes to 6 networks with a separate version of every post for $19 a month flat, so one brand on all 6 networks costs $19 instead of $30 on Buffer Essentials, and its MCP server for AI agents is on every plan.

Yes. Buffer's Claude integration page describes an official remote MCP server at mcp.buffer.com/mcp that lets Claude draft posts, review the queue and schedule. The page does not state which Buffer plans include it. Postprism's hosted MCP server, with 11 tools, is on every plan.

Is Hootsuite cheaper than Buffer?

No, not for most small teams. Hootsuite starts at $99 per user a month billed annually for up to 10 accounts, while Buffer Essentials is $5 per channel, or $50 for 10 channels. Hootsuite includes an inbox and listening that Buffer's plans do not focus on, which is what the higher price pays for.

Does Later have an MCP server?

Later's pricing page, checked October 2026, does not list an MCP server or an API. Its plans cover AI credits for captions and ideas. If agent access matters, Postprism, SocialPilot, Agorapulse and Metricool all list MCP on their pricing pages.

Does Hootsuite have an MCP server?

Yes. Hootsuite's MCP page, checked October 2026, lists four servers: Perch for drafting, scheduling and publishing posts, Nest for the inbox, Lumen for listening and Parliament for employee advocacy, with connectors for ChatGPT and Claude. The page does not say which plans include them. Postprism's MCP server works on every plan, from $19 a month.

Does Sprout Social have an MCP server?

Sprout Social's pricing page does not list an MCP server. It includes Trellis, its AI agent, with 100 agent credits per seat a month, and the Sprout API on the Advanced plan.

Is there a free Buffer alternative?

Yes. Publer's free plan covers 3 social accounts (not X) with 10 scheduled posts per account at a time, and Metricool's free plan covers 1 brand with 20 posts a month, without LinkedIn or X. Postprism offers a 7-day free trial on every plan.

Is Postprism cheaper than Buffer?

From five channels up, yes. Buffer Essentials is $25 at 5 channels and $30 for one brand on 6 networks, while Postprism Solo is $19 flat for all 6. With several brands, Freelancer is $49 for up to 3 with approvals, against $10 per channel on Buffer Team. For one to three channels, Buffer's free plan or Essentials at $5 to $15 costs less than Postprism Solo's $19 monthly price.

Can I move my Buffer posts to Postprism?

Yes. Put your upcoming posts in a spreadsheet with content, scheduled_at and optional media_url columns, save it as CSV and use Bulk Upload, which takes up to 200 rows and 2 MB per file on every plan.

Which Buffer alternative is best for agencies?

Postprism Agency, for most agencies: 10 client workspaces, up to 10 team members, approvals, the REST API and analytics CSV export for $99 a month, with no charge per connected channel. SocialPilot and Agorapulse suit agencies that want white-label reports or an inbox-first suite.
