Choose Later if Instagram and TikTok are your whole strategy and you want link-in-bio and influencer tools in the same app. Choose Buffer if you want the simplest per-channel scheduler with a free plan. If you publish to five or more networks and want a tailored version of each post, Postprism is our pick: 6 networks, one calendar, flat pricing from $19 a month.
Later and Buffer are often compared because they sit at a similar price point and both started as friendly tools for small brands. In 2026 they have drifted apart. Later now leads its homepage with influencer marketing, while Buffer has stayed a lean, per-channel publishing tool with a generous free plan. This guide compares them on what you will actually pay, which networks each one can publish to, how many posts you can schedule, how teams approve content and what the analytics tell you. Every price and limit comes from the vendors' own pages, checked in October 2026.
Key findings
- Later caps posts on cheaper plans. Its Starter plan (about $18.75 a month billed yearly) allows 30 posts per profile, Growth allows 180, and only Scale (about $82.50 a month billed yearly) is unlimited.
- Buffer charges per channel. Essentials costs $60 per channel a year and Team $120 per channel a year; the free plan covers 3 channels with 10 scheduled posts each.
- Network lists differ. Later's pricing page lists Instagram, Facebook, Threads, Pinterest, TikTok, LinkedIn, YouTube and Snapchat. Buffer's homepage lists 12, including X, Bluesky, Mastodon and Substack.
- Approvals sit on mid-tier plans. Later includes internal and external approvals from Growth up; Buffer includes approval workflows only on Team.
- Consistency pays on Instagram. Buffer's analysis of about 2.1 million posts found accounts posting 3 to 5 times a week got about 12% more reach per post than accounts posting once or twice.
- Audiences are spread thin. GWI data in DataReportal's Digital 2026 report shows the average internet user is on 6.75 social platforms a month, which favours tools that cover many networks well.
What's changed in 2026
Later repositioned around influencer marketing
Visit Later's homepage today and the headline is about influencer marketing built for creators, with stats on creators analysed and influencer-driven purchases. Social scheduling is still there, and the site reports 136 billion annual impressions from scheduled posts, but the company's centre of gravity has moved. That matters if you are buying Later only for scheduling: the roadmap is increasingly shaped by brand and creator campaigns.
Buffer added MCP so AI assistants can schedule
On 10 June 2026 Buffer announced that you can connect Buffer to Claude, ChatGPT and Perplexity through the Model Context Protocol. Postprism ships an MCP server with 11 tools on every plan, so this is fast becoming a standard feature for schedulers rather than a differentiator. Our MCP docs show how it works.
Networks tightened the rules for scheduled content
Meta said on 14 July 2025 that it would reduce the distribution of duplicate content and of accounts that repeatedly reuse others' posts, and Instagram's own ranking explainer notes that Reels which have already been posted on Instagram are shown less. Threads, meanwhile, rejects API posts with more than 5 unique links from 22 December 2025. Tools that make a per-network version easy are better placed for these rules than tools that push one caption everywhere.
Threads and Bluesky became real channels
Meta reported on 16 June 2026 that Threads reached 500 million monthly active users, and Bluesky's 2025 transparency report says it grew from 25.94 million to 41.41 million users. Two years ago a Later vs Buffer decision could ignore both. In 2026, whether a tool publishes to them is part of the comparison.

Later in depth
What Later does best
Later earned its reputation with visual planning. You upload photos and videos to a media library, drag them onto a calendar and see how your Instagram grid will look before anything goes live. Link in Bio is included on every plan, and Later says it has tracked more than 1 billion Link in Bio transactions. For a brand whose identity lives in a grid of images, such as a ceramics studio, a boutique or a café, that workflow is pleasant and fast.
Later's mid and upper plans add features aimed at brands that work with creators. Growth includes user-generated content collection, a social inbox, smart scheduling and custom roles. Scale adds Meta Ads analytics, competitive benchmarking, brand health and brand mentions. If you already pay for influencer campaigns, keeping scheduling and creator work in one vendor has real appeal.
Later's plans and limits
Later sells "social sets". Each set includes one profile on each supported network, so one set equals up to 8 profiles. According to Later's pricing page as of October 2026:
| Plan | Price (billed yearly) | Social sets | Users | Posts | AI credits | Analytics history |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Starter | About $18.75/month | 1 (8 profiles) | 1 | 30 per profile | 5 | Up to 3 months |
| Growth | About $37.50/month | 2 (16 profiles) | 2 | 180 per profile | 50 | Up to 1 year |
| Scale | About $82.50/month | 6 (48 profiles) | 4 | Unlimited | 100 | Up to 2 years |
On Growth and Scale you can add social sets for $11.25 a month each, users for $3.75 a month each and AI credits at $3.75 per 100. Approvals and the social inbox are not on Starter.
Where Later falls short
- No X or Bluesky on the network list. Later's pricing page lists eight networks, and neither X nor Bluesky is among them. For founders, B2B brands and media companies that live on text networks, this is often the deal-breaker.
- Post caps on Starter and Growth. Thirty posts per profile is roughly one post a day on each network. A brand posting twice a day on Threads will hit it in two weeks.
- Visual-first editor. Later's workflow is built around media. Text-led posts work, but the tool is not designed around writing a strong LinkedIn post and a tight X post from the same idea.
- Yearly billing in the headline price. The prices shown are billed yearly. If you want month-to-month flexibility, expect to pay more.
Buffer in depth
What Buffer does best
Buffer is the easiest scheduler to learn. You connect a channel, set posting slots once, and add posts to a queue that fills those slots. Its homepage lists 12 supported networks: Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, LinkedIn, X, YouTube, Threads, Pinterest, Google Business Profile, Bluesky, Mastodon and Substack. Buffer also publishes unusually open company data; its homepage shows 82,948 total customers and $27.1 million in annual recurring revenue.
Buffer's research team is also one of the better sources of free data in this industry. Its State of Social Media Engagement 2026 analysed more than 52 million posts across 10 platforms, and its frequency study is one of the few with a proper statistical model. Using a tool built by people who study what works has a small but real benefit: the defaults tend to be sensible.
Buffer's plans and limits
From Buffer's pricing page as of October 2026:
| Plan | Price | Channels | Scheduled posts | Users | Approvals | Analytics |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Free | $0 | Up to 3 | 10 per channel | 1 | No | 30-day insights history |
| Essentials | $60 per channel a year | Per channel | Unlimited (5,000 fair-use cap) | 1 | No | Advanced analytics, reports, custom UTM parameters |
| Team | $120 per channel a year | Per channel | Unlimited (5,000 fair-use cap) | Unlimited | Yes | As Essentials, plus branded reports |
Buffer says annual billing saves 20% and that channels above 10 are cheaper per channel. Every plan includes the AI Assistant, the Start Page link-in-bio and a community inbox.
Where Buffer falls short
- Costs scale with every channel. Per-channel pricing is great at three channels and painful at twelve. A brand on all six major networks pays six times the channel price.
- Team features need the Team plan. Approvals, access levels and custom permissions are on Team only, which doubles the per-channel price.
- Single user on Essentials. The moment a second person needs to log in, you are on Team.
- Queue-first thinking. The queue is great for steady cadence, but brands planning campaigns around dates often prefer a calendar-first view.
Postprism: our pick for multi-network brands
Postprism is a social media scheduler built around one content calendar with month, week and day views, drag and drop, and a kanban board for drafts and approvals. It publishes to 6 networks: LinkedIn, X, TikTok, YouTube, Bluesky and Pinterest. The part that sets it apart from both Later and Buffer is that each network gets its own editable version of the post in the editor. You write the idea once, then shape a LinkedIn version, an X version and a TikTok caption side by side, by hand or with optional AI adaptation that follows your saved brand voice.
What each network gets is concrete. X gets single posts with up to 4 images. LinkedIn takes text, a single image or a video, to personal profiles and Company Pages. TikTok gets video and photo posts, as a direct post or an inbox draft. YouTube gets video with title, description, tags, privacy, playlist and thumbnail, with short vertical videos becoming Shorts. Bluesky gets text with links, mentions and hashtags. Pinterest gets image Pins with board, title, description and link. See multi-platform posting for the full breakdown.
Pricing is flat. Solo is $19 a month for all 6 networks and unlimited posts. Freelancer is $49 a month with 3 client workspaces, 3 team members and an approval workflow. Agency is $99 a month with 10 workspaces, up to 10 team members, approvals and CSV export. Annual billing saves 25%. Every plan starts with a 7-day free trial.
The real question behind "Later or Buffer" is usually "how many networks do I publish to, and does each one need its own version?" At two or three visual networks, Later is pleasant. At three channels on a budget, Buffer is fine. At five or more networks with different audiences, a calendar that holds a separate version per network saves the most time.
Pricing compared for real setups
Headline prices hide how each model scales. Here is what four common setups cost, using each vendor's published prices in October 2026. Buffer figures use the yearly per-channel price divided by 12; Later figures use the yearly-billed monthly price; Postprism figures use monthly billing.
| Setup | Later | Buffer | Postprism |
|---|---|---|---|
| Solo creator: TikTok, YouTube, Pinterest, light posting | Starter, about $18.75 (30 posts per profile) | Free (10 posts per channel) or Essentials, $15 | Solo, $19 |
| Founder: LinkedIn, X, Bluesky, TikTok, YouTube, daily posting | X and Bluesky not listed | Essentials, 5 channels, $25 | Solo, $19 |
| Small brand: all 6 major networks, one user | Starter caps posts; Scale for unlimited, about $82.50 | Essentials, 6 channels, $30 | Solo, $19 |
| Team of 3 with approvals, 6 networks | Growth with an extra user, about $41.25 (180 posts per profile) | Team, 6 channels, $60 | Freelancer, $49 |
Two patterns stand out. Buffer is the cheapest at three channels or fewer, and its free plan is genuinely useful for testing. As soon as you publish everywhere or add a teammate, flat pricing wins. Our scheduling tools pricing guide runs the same maths across more tools.
Instagram and TikTok workflow compared
Planning the Instagram grid
This is Later's home turf. The visual planner shows your grid with scheduled posts in place, so you can balance colours and formats before publishing. Buffer shows posts in a queue and calendar. Postprism keeps every network it publishes to on one calendar, and you can sketch a grid first with our free Instagram feed planner.
Carousels
Carousels matter more than ever. Buffer's 2026 engagement report found Instagram carousels earned a 6.90% engagement rate as a share of reach, against 4.44% for single images and 3.31% for Reels. Instagram's publishing API limits carousels to 10 images or videos and accepts only JPEG images, so any scheduler is working inside the same limits. Later and Buffer both schedule carousels. Our carousel best practices guide covers structure.
TikTok
TikTok says its For You feed ranks videos on user interactions, video information and device settings, and that follower count is not a direct factor. That makes steady output more important than audience size, which is where scheduling earns its keep. Later and Buffer both schedule TikTok video. Postprism publishes TikTok video and photo posts, either directly or as an inbox draft you finish in the app. See TikTok scheduling.
Link in bio
Later's Link in Bio and Buffer's Start Page are both included on every plan. If link-in-bio is central to how you sell, weigh it. Many brands now point their bio at a page on their own site instead, which builds their domain and keeps tracking clean. Tag that link with UTM parameters; Google Analytics recommends always including utm_source, utm_medium and utm_campaign, and our free UTM builder does it in seconds.
Text networks: LinkedIn, X, Threads and Bluesky
This is where the comparison tilts away from Later. Pew Research Center's 2025 survey of 5,022 US adults found 84% use YouTube, 71% Facebook, 50% Instagram and 37% TikTok, but for B2B brands and founders the conversation often happens on LinkedIn, X, Threads and Bluesky. Buffer's 2026 data puts LinkedIn's median engagement rate at about 6.2%, the highest of the networks it measured, and found LinkedIn carousels at 21.77%.
Later lists LinkedIn and Threads, but not X or Bluesky. Buffer covers all four. Postprism covers LinkedIn, X and Bluesky and adds the per-network version, which matters more on text networks than anywhere else. Threads caps posts at 500 characters, X single posts are short, and LinkedIn rewards a strong opening and a clear point of view. LinkedIn announced in September 2026 that it had cut views of AI slop content by 40%, defining it as generic, recycled posts without a point of view. One caption pasted into four networks is exactly what those systems learn to ignore.
| Text network | Later | Buffer | Postprism |
|---|---|---|---|
| Listed | Yes | Text, single image or video, to profiles and Company Pages | |
| X | Not listed | Yes | Single posts with up to 4 images |
| Bluesky | Not listed | Yes | Text with links, mentions and hashtags |
Teams, approvals and agencies
Later includes internal and external approvals plus custom roles from Growth up, with 2 users included and extra users at $3.75 a month. Buffer includes approvals, access levels and unlimited users on Team, priced per channel. Postprism includes an approval workflow on Freelancer and Agency, where Owners and Admins approve or request changes, with four roles (Owner, Admin, Editor and Viewer) and separate client workspaces. For agencies, the workspace model is the deciding factor: each client's accounts, brand voice and calendar stay apart, and a client can be a Viewer who signs off without touching anything else. Our team collaboration page and approval workflow guide go deeper.
Analytics compared
Later's analytics history runs from 3 months on Starter to 2 years on Scale, with competitive benchmarking and brand mentions on Scale. Buffer offers 30 days of insights on Free and advanced analytics, reports and custom UTM parameters on paid plans. Postprism's analytics bring reach, engagement and growth for every connected network into one dashboard, with 30-day history on Solo, 90-day on Freelancer and CSV export on Agency.
Whichever tool you choose, judge analytics on whether they answer one question: which posts moved your goal? Engagement rate, clicks and saves usually say more than follower counts. Our metrics and KPIs guide lists what to track per network.
Worked example: one week for a coffee roaster
Comparisons stay abstract until you push a real week through each tool. Take a small coffee roaster, Ridgeline Coffee, with a part-time marketer and the owner as approver. They post on Instagram, TikTok, Facebook, Pinterest, LinkedIn (for wholesale buyers and hiring) and Threads. This week has one idea per weekday: a new single-origin launch, a brewing tip, a behind-the-scenes roast video, a café partner spotlight and a weekend offer.
In Later
The marketer uploads the roast video and product photos to the media library, drags them onto the calendar and checks the Instagram grid. Instagram, TikTok, Facebook, Pinterest, LinkedIn and Threads are all on Later's list, so every network is covered. With six networks and roughly one post a day on each, Starter's 30-posts-per-profile cap would be close by the end of the month, and the owner's approval step needs Growth. Realistic plan: Growth at about $37.50 a month billed yearly, plus $3.75 for a third user if a designer joins.
In Buffer
The marketer sets posting slots for each channel and adds posts to the queue, customising text per channel. Six channels on Essentials cost $360 a year, about $30 a month, but the owner cannot approve posts there; approvals need Team at $720 a year for six channels, about $60 a month. The queue keeps cadence steady, which suits the brewing-tip series.
In Postprism
The marketer drafts each idea once on the calendar, then fills in the per-network versions: a LinkedIn version aimed at wholesale buyers, a Pinterest Pin linking to the product page and a TikTok of the roast with the flavour notes on screen. The owner, set up as an Admin or Viewer, approves from the kanban board. Freelancer at $49 a month covers 3 team members and approvals, with room to add X, YouTube or Bluesky later at no extra cost.
| Ridgeline's week | TikTok | ||
|---|---|---|---|
| Monday: new origin launch | Wholesale angle: availability and minimum order | Product Pin linking to the shop page | Unboxing clip with tasting notes on screen |
| Tuesday: brewing tip | Text post on why grind size matters for cafés | Infographic Pin to the brew guide | 30-second grind-size demo |
| Wednesday: roast video | Short video on quality control | Roastery image Pin | The roast video itself |
The ideas are the same across networks, but no two versions are identical. That is the work a scheduler should make easy, and it is the main reason Postprism comes out ahead for brands like Ridgeline. If you want the method behind this, our guide to writing for multiple platforms walks through it step by step.
How much posting each tool supports
Frequency is where post caps and per-channel pricing really bite, so it helps to know what good cadence looks like. Buffer's own study of about 2.1 million Instagram posts from roughly 102,000 accounts found that posting 3 to 5 times a week gave about 12% more reach per post than 1 to 2 times, 6 to 9 times about 18% more, and 10 or more about 24% more. Its 2026 engagement report adds what it calls a no-post penalty: accounts that skipped a week underperformed their own baseline follower growth.
Translate that into tool limits. A brand posting five times a week on Instagram publishes about 21 or 22 posts a month there, inside Later Starter's 30-post cap. The same brand posting daily on Threads and LinkedIn, plus a few Pins a week, will need Growth or Scale on Later, while Buffer's paid plans and every Postprism plan carry no practical cap. If your plan is built around consistency, and it should be, make sure the plan you pick allows the cadence you are aiming for. Our guide on how often to post on social media sets out starting ranges for every network.
Who each tool is not for
- Later is not for text-led brands that depend on X or Bluesky, teams posting several times a day on many networks on a small budget, or anyone who wants monthly billing at the headline price.
- Buffer is not for brands on nine or more channels that want one predictable bill, teams that need approvals without moving to a per-channel Team plan, or planners who think in calendars and campaigns rather than queues.
- Postprism is built for brands, founders, freelancers and agencies publishing across several networks who want a tailored version per network, approvals and unlimited posts at a flat price. If you only ever post to one Instagram account, a simpler single-network tool may be all you need.
Publishing limits every scheduler shares
No scheduler can publish more than a network's API allows, so some limits are the same in Later, Buffer and Postprism. Instagram's content publishing guide says accounts are limited to 100 API-published posts in a 24-hour moving period, and carousels hold up to 10 items. Threads allows 250 published posts per profile in 24 hours, counts a carousel as one post, and caps text at 500 characters. Pinterest's creative guidance recommends a 2:3 vertical image at 1000 x 1500 pixels and notes that only the first 40 characters of a title are likely to be seen.
These limits rarely matter for a single brand, but they matter for how a tool behaves when something fails. A good scheduler tells you clearly when a post was rejected and why, rather than leaving a silent gap in the feed. In Postprism, the publishing result is recorded for each network on each post, so a failure on one network is visible straight away and the post can be fixed and rescheduled. Our guide to scheduled posts not publishing covers the usual causes, from expired connections to images in the wrong format.
Best for, by use case
Instagram-first shop or creator
Later is a natural fit if your grid is your storefront and you value link-in-bio and UGC tools. Postprism is the better choice once you add LinkedIn, X or Bluesky, or once Later's post caps start to pinch.
Solo poster on three channels with no budget
Buffer Free covers 3 channels with 10 scheduled posts each. It is a sensible way to learn scheduling. When you outgrow 10 posts, compare Essentials with Postprism Solo at a flat $19.
Founder or consultant on text networks
Postprism. LinkedIn, X and Bluesky all reward native writing, and Postprism keeps a separate version for each on one calendar. Later does not list X or Bluesky, and Buffer's per-channel model adds up across five or six networks.
Small business with a team
Postprism Freelancer at $49 a month gives 3 team members, approvals and all 6 networks. Buffer Team for the same 6 networks is about $60 a month on yearly billing.
Agency
Postprism Agency covers 10 client workspaces, up to 10 team members and approvals for $99 a month. See Postprism for agencies.
Brand running influencer campaigns
Later, if creator campaigns are a big part of your budget and you want one vendor for both. Many brands pair a dedicated influencer platform with a scheduler instead.
How to choose and switch: a 7-step method
- List every network you publish to, and every one you plan to add in the next 12 months. If X or Bluesky is on the list, Later's network list rules it out.
- Count your posts per network per month. Compare against Later's 30 and 180 per-profile caps and Buffer Free's 10 per channel.
- Count the people who need to log in. One person fits any plan. Two or more pushes Buffer to Team and Later to Growth.
- Price your real setup on each pricing page. Use yearly and monthly billing. Write the monthly figure in a table, not the headline price.
- Run the same real week in each trial. Take five actual posts and schedule them in each tool across every network you use. Time it. Note how many times you copy and paste.
- Export or copy everything scheduled in your old tool. Postprism's bulk scheduling imports a CSV with content, scheduled_at and optional media_url columns, or XLSX and JSON, with a preview table before anything is scheduled.
- Overlap for one week, then cancel. Keep the old tool's queue paused, not deleted, until the new calendar has published a full week without gaps or doubles.
Common mistakes when choosing between Later and Buffer
- Comparing headline prices. Later's headline is yearly billing; Buffer's is per channel. Fix: price your exact setup, monthly, in one table.
- Ignoring post caps. Thirty posts per profile sounds like a lot until you post daily. Fix: multiply your daily cadence by 30 and check the plan.
- Forgetting future networks. Brands often add Threads or Bluesky within a year. Fix: choose for the networks you will use next year, not only today.
- Posting identical captions everywhere. Meta and LinkedIn both now down-rank recycled content. Fix: write a version per network, even if it is just a different first line.
- Choosing on link-in-bio alone. It is one feature among many. Fix: list your top five daily tasks and score each tool on those.
- Underestimating team growth. Adding a second user changes the plan on both tools. Fix: price the plan you will need in six months.
- Skipping the trial with real content. Demo content hides friction. Fix: schedule a real week in each tool.
- Not checking format support. Carousels, video and Pins behave differently by tool and network. Fix: check each format you use against each network's support.
- Ignoring time zones. A global audience with a single schedule misses people. Fix: set your workspace time zone deliberately and schedule for where your audience lives, not where you live.
- Treating analytics as an afterthought. History limits matter when you review a year. Fix: check how many months of data each plan keeps.
- Cancelling before migrating. Scheduled posts can disappear with a cancelled plan. Fix: export first, overlap for a week, then cancel.
- Letting the tool set the strategy. A visual tool nudges you towards visual content; a queue nudges you to fill slots. Fix: decide your mix first, then pick the tool that fits it.
Our verdict
Later is the stronger visual planner for Instagram and TikTok brands that also run influencer campaigns. Buffer is the simplest and cheapest scheduler for up to three channels, with a free plan worth trying. For most brands publishing across both visual and text networks, Postprism wins: it covers all 6 major networks including X and Bluesky, holds a separate version of each post per network on one calendar, includes unlimited posts on every plan, and keeps pricing flat as you add networks and teammates.
