Start from your highest-res original
Thumbnails are scrutinized at small sizes but also stretch onto large screens. Scaling a big source down keeps detail; scaling a small one up loses it.
Respect the channel art safe zone
Channel art is 2560 × 1440, but only a center band shows on phones and TVs. Run it through the YouTube Safe Zone tool to keep your text and logo visible everywhere.
Center your subject before uploading
This tool center-crops outward from the middle. Position the focal point of your thumbnail in the center of the original so it stays framed after the crop.
Keep thumbnail text large and central
Most views happen on small screens. Bold, centered text near the middle of a 1280 × 720 thumbnail reads clearly even when the image is tiny.
PNG for graphics, JPEG for photos
