Pinterest Pin Sizes and Aspect Ratios in 2026: The Complete, Sourced Guide

The best Pinterest Pin size in 2026 is 1000 x 1500 pixels, a 2:3 aspect ratio, which Pinterest itself recommends. Pins taller than 2:3 may be cut off in the feed. Square 1:1 Pins work but take less space. Video Pins can be 1:2, 2:3, 3:4, 4:5, 1:1 or full-screen 9:16 at 1080 x 1920 pixels.

Pinterest is a visual search engine, and the image is what earns the click, the save and the visit to your site. The right size gives your Pin the most room in the grid without losing the bottom of it, and the right safe zone keeps your text clear of the buttons that sit on top. This guide gives every Pinterest size and text limit checked against Pinterest's own help centre and ad specs, adds what independent studies of over a million Pins found about shape and format, and breaks the advice down by Pin format, device, niche, account type and goal. It ends with a step-by-step method, copy-ready templates and the mistakes that cost Pins their reach.

Key findings

  • 2:3 is the official standard. Pinterest's product specs recommend 1000 x 1500 px and warn that "Pins with an aspect ratio greater than 2:3 might get cut off in people's feeds."
  • Safe zones are big at the bottom. Pinterest's Pin specs list safe zones of 270 px at the top, 65 px on the left, 195 px on the right and 790 px at the bottom for full-screen Pins.
  • Only the start of a title shows. Titles can be 100 characters, but Pinterest says the first 40 are most likely to appear in feeds.
  • Images still dominate viral Pins. Tailwind's study of over a million Pins from about 17,000 accounts found 89% of the most viral Pins were image Pins, 8% video and 2% collages.
  • Tall video wins. In the same study, 76% of the viral video Pins were 2:3 or taller, and square and landscape videos "performed quite poorly".
  • Video engages more where it is used. Buffer's 2026 format study found a median engagement rate of 5.75% for Pinterest video against 3.15% for images.
  • The audience keeps growing. Pinterest reported a record 640 million monthly active users in Q2 2026, up 11% year on year, in its August 2026 results.

What's changed for Pinterest sizes in 2026

A bigger, younger audience

Pinterest hit 640 million monthly active users in the quarter to June 30, 2026, and its audience page for advertisers says Gen Z now makes up half of its global users and that 96% of top searches are unbranded. People arrive with an idea, not a brand in mind, so the image has to explain the idea at a glance.

Engagement is rising, and video leads

Buffer's 2026 engagement report found Pinterest's median engagement rate rose from about 3.2% in 2024 to about 3.9% in 2025, a 23% increase. Its format breakdown put video ahead of images. That does not mean images are finished: Tailwind's data shows images still make up most of the Pins that travel furthest. It means a vertical video Pin is worth testing alongside your image Pins.

Longer descriptions, shorter visible titles

Pinterest's current Pin specs allow descriptions of up to 800 characters, though Pinterest notes they "do not appear when viewing the Pin in the home feed or search feed." Its creative best practices page still gives 500 characters for descriptions, and it stresses that only the first 40 characters of a title are likely to show. Write a title that works in 40 characters, and keep the description under 500 so it fits everywhere.

Light and dark mode change white backgrounds

A detail many designers miss: the Pin specs page says light mode adds a faint black layer at 4% opacity to white or near-white image backgrounds, and dark mode adds a faint white layer at 10% opacity to black or near-black backgrounds. Pure white Pins will look slightly grey in the app. If your brand depends on a crisp white, give it a subtle border or a tinted background so the change is not noticeable.

Pinterest accepts BMP, JPEG, PNG, TIFF and WEBP images up to 20 MB on the web, per its Pin specs page. If you have an image in the wrong shape, our free Pinterest image resizer crops to 2:3, square and long formats in your browser, and the aspect ratio glossary entry explains the maths.

Why 2:3 is the standard

Pinterest shows Pins in a grid of columns of fixed width. A taller Pin takes more vertical space, so it stays on screen longer as people scroll. But Pinterest limits how tall a Pin can appear: go past 2:3 and the bottom may be cut off, so the most important part of a long infographic may never be seen. The 2:3 ratio is the balance, tall enough to stand out and short enough to show in full. Sprout Social notes in its May 2026 size guide that Pins are scaled down to the column width in feeds with the height adjusted to match, so a wider file does not buy you more space; the shape does.

Pinterest's own advice agrees from the other direction. Its Pin performance and distribution page recommends a 2:3 aspect ratio for images and videos and a vertical format "since most of the audience is on mobile", and warns that "blurry or distorted images and videos will make it difficult for people to see your idea."

Design every image Pin at 1000 x 1500 px unless you have a specific reason not to. It shows in full, takes good space, and matches what Pinterest recommends.

Who you are designing for

Size decisions follow from who is looking. Pinterest's audience is large, young and in a planning mindset. Globally, it reached 640 million monthly users in Q2 2026, and Pinterest says half are Gen Z. In the US, Pew's social media fact sheet puts Pinterest use at 37% of adults in 2025. Pinterest's advertiser audience page gives a UK breakdown that shows how broad the reach is by age: 39% of 18 to 24 year olds, 31% of 25 to 34s, 29% of 35 to 44s and 30% of those 45 and over, with a 70% female, 28% male split among adults.

The same page says 80% of weekly Pinners feel inspired by shopping on Pinterest. People are saving ideas for later: a kitchen, a wedding, a holiday, next week's dinners. That is why clarity beats cleverness on a Pin. Someone should understand what the idea is, and what they get by clicking, from a two-column thumbnail on a phone.

Breakdown 1: by Pin format

Standard image Pins

The workhorse. Use 2:3 at 1000 x 1500 px, one clear subject, and a short text overlay that states the benefit. Tailwind's study found close to a 50/50 split between raw photos and designed images among viral Pins, with the mix varying a lot by category, so test both in your niche. It also found 87 of the 100 most common dominant colours in viral Pin images were white, near-white or light grey: light, airy images are the norm.

You do not need professional software to compete. Among the viral designed Pins Tailwind examined, 60% appeared to be made with Pin-specific tools such as Tailwind Create, 36% with accessible design tools such as Canva and 4% with general tools such as PowerPoint, and none appeared to need professional tools like Photoshop. A good template at the right size, used consistently, matters more than design skill. What separates strong Pins is clarity: an image that shows the idea, words that name the benefit, and a layout that survives the crop at phone width.

Square Pins

Square 1:1 Pins are allowed and save time when you reuse Instagram images, but they take a third less height than a 2:3 Pin at the same width. If you reuse a square, extend it to 2:3 with a title band above or below.

Video Pins

Pinterest's Pin specs list MP4 and M4V on the web (and MOV in the app), H.264 or H.265 encoding, a length of 4 seconds to 5 minutes, and 9:16 at 1080 x 1920 px for full-screen video, with 1:2, 2:3, 3:4, 4:5 and 1:1 also allowed. The distribution page suggests 15 to 60 seconds. Tailwind's study found tall formats dominate: 76% of viral video Pins were 2:3 or taller, and videos between 2:3 and 1:2 earned more saves and outbound clicks per Pin. Sprout Social's video specs guide adds that video uploads need a business account.

Carousel Pins

Carousels let people swipe through 2 to 5 images. Pinterest's carousel help page says images must be square 1:1 or vertical 2:3, and that carousels can only be created on desktop. Use one ratio for all cards, and use them for steps, variations and before-and-after sequences.

Long Pins and infographics

Long Pins were popular for checklists and infographics, but Pinterest's spec warning is clear: anything taller than 2:3 may be cut off. Split long content into a 2:3 Pin that teases the full list, or a carousel of 2:3 cards, and link to the full version on your site.

Breakdown 2: by device and display mode

Mobile app

Most Pinterest use is on phones, which is why both Pinterest pages quoted above push vertical formats. In the app, the save button, profile details and other controls sit on top of full-screen Pins, which is what the safe zones protect. Text must be readable at roughly half the screen width, because the home feed shows two columns.

Desktop

Desktop shows more columns, so each Pin is narrower relative to the screen. A 2:3 Pin with large text survives; a dense infographic does not. Desktop is also where carousels are made, and where Pinterest's web uploader caps image files at 20 MB.

Light and dark mode

As noted above, Pinterest tints pure white and pure black backgrounds slightly. Test key templates in both modes, and avoid relying on a pure white edge to frame a Pin.

Safe zones on full-screen Pins

Pinterest's Pin specs give the same safe zones for image and video Pins: keep text and logos out of the top 270 px, the left 65 px, the right 195 px and the bottom 790 px of a 1080 x 1920 px canvas. That bottom figure is large because captions, buttons and product tags sit there. Hootsuite's October 2026 guide repeats the same numbers. Our safe zone glossary entry explains the idea across networks.

Breakdown 3: by niche

Pinterest is organised around interests, and each niche has its own visual language. These are starting points.

NicheLead formatImage styleText overlay
Food and recipes2:3 image, short videoOverhead or close-up, natural lightDish name and time, such as "20-minute pasta"
Home and decor2:3 image, carouselBright rooms, styled cornersOften none; let the room speak

Travel2:3 imageA single striking placeDestination plus a hook, such as "3 days in Lisbon"
B2B and education2:3 designed PinClean layouts, one chart or ideaThe benefit in five to eight words

Whatever the niche, Tailwind found only 4% of the most viral designed Pins built their design on the brand's colour palette. Pins that look like useful ideas beat Pins that look like ads, which matches Pinterest's own advice to keep logos visible but not overpowering.

Breakdown 4: by account type and goal

Bloggers and publishers chasing traffic

Every Pin should link to a specific article, and the image should promise exactly what the article delivers. Make several designs per article: Tailwind's Part 3 study found Pins that reused a URL with a new image kept 64% of their original distribution even on the 11th to 25th Pin for that URL, while Pins that reused the same image with changed text kept 11%. Fresh images matter more than fresh words. Tag links with UTM parameters using our UTM builder to see which designs drive visits.

Ecommerce brands

Show the product in use, in a real setting, at 2:3. Pinterest's creative page advises featuring the product in a realistic setting and keeping the logo visible without letting it overpower the image. Carousels of 1:1 product shots work for variations, and catalogue-based formats pull their own sizes from your product feed.

Creators and educators

Video Pins at 9:16 or 2:3 showing a technique work well, with a 2:3 image Pin for the same idea to compare. Our guide to making money on Pinterest covers monetisation routes.

Local businesses

Use 2:3 photos of your work with the place name in the title, such as "Small garden ideas from our Leeds projects". Pinterest is a search engine, and local terms in titles help the right people find you.

Design rules for Pins that get saved

The right size gets your Pin seen in full. These rules, drawn from Pinterest's creative guidance and the Tailwind data, help it get saved and clicked.

One idea, one focal point

A single clear subject reads at thumbnail size; a busy collage does not. If you need to show several things, use a carousel.

Text overlay at the top

Pinterest's creative best practices suggest putting "visuals in the middle, key messaging as text overlay at the top, and extra details at the bottom". The top is also outside the large bottom safe zone. Five to eight words is plenty.

Light, natural images

White and light backgrounds dominated the viral Pins in Tailwind's data, and over one in four viral raw-photo Pins were of amateur quality. Natural light and a real setting matter more than studio polish.

Readable type

Large, high-contrast fonts, no more than two typefaces, and no thin script fonts for key words. Check every design at the size of one column on a phone.

Small, consistent branding

Pinterest asks advertisers to keep the logo "clearly visible" without letting it overpower the creative. For organic Pins, a small logo or URL in the same corner of every design builds recognition without looking like an ad.

Fresh images, not reposts

Pinterest's distribution page warns that repeatedly saving the same Pins or re-uploading existing content can be flagged as spam and lead to a temporary block. New designs for the same page are both safer and, per Tailwind, far more effective.

Organic Pins versus Pinterest ads

If you promote Pins, the ad specs are stricter and differ by format. Pinterest's product specs page lists these, among others.

Ad formatRatioFile limitsLength or count
Standard image ad2:3 recommended (1000 x 1500 px)PNG or JPEG, 20 MB desktop, 32 MB in appOne image
Standard width video adSquare or vertical (2:3, 4:5, 9:16) recommendedMP4, MOV or M4V, up to 2 GB4 seconds to 15 minutes; 6 to 15 seconds recommended
Max width video adHeight no more than 1:1Up to 2 GB4 seconds to 15 minutes
Carousel ad1:1 or 2:3PNG or JPEG, 20 MB per image2 to 5 images
Collections adHero 1:1 or 2:3; secondary all one ratioPNG or JPEG, 10 MB1 hero, 3 to 24 secondary images

The practical rule: if a Pin might be promoted later, make it at 2:3 from the start, keep text inside the safe zone and keep the file under 20 MB, and it will qualify for the standard image ad without changes.

Profile, cover and board images

Your profile is where people decide whether to follow you after saving a Pin, so it deserves the same care. Upload a square profile picture at least 280 x 280 px (it is shown as a circle) with a clear face or simple logo. The profile cover should be 16:9 at 800 x 450 px or larger, and can show your best Pins or a short brand image. Board covers are chosen from Pins in the board and display small, at about 222 x 150 px in Sprout's measurement, so pick a cover Pin with a single clear subject and little text. Keep board names short and searchable, because boards are part of how Pinterest understands what your Pins are about.

Alt text and accessible Pins

Pinterest lets you add alt text to Pins, and it is worth doing every time. Describe what the image shows and repeat any text in the overlay, so people using screen readers get the same promise as everyone else. Good alt text is also good practice for clarity: if you cannot describe the Pin's idea in a sentence, the image probably is not clear enough either. Our alt text glossary entry has examples you can adapt.

How Pin size affects distribution over time

Pinterest is slower than other networks, and that changes how you judge a size or design test. Pinterest's distribution page says "there's no set engagement window for Pins" and that "Pins last forever on Pinterest", so a Pin can find its audience months later. Tailwind's Part 3 study found most brand-new Pins had no impressions in their first couple of days and about 20% still had none after a week, with distribution expanding over the first 90 days. Its Part 1 study, of about 430,000 fresh Pins, found the top 1% drove over half of impressions and clicks, and that over 90% of traffic to creator and brand sites came from their own new Pins rather than saves of other people's.

The lesson for sizing is to test over months, not days, and to publish many fresh designs rather than perfecting one. Tailwind's Part 3 report suggests judging results by steady week-over-week gains over two to three months. Our guide to how the Pinterest algorithm works explains distribution in more depth.

Breakdown 5: by season

Pinterest's distribution page lists language, location, seasons, holidays, formats and trending topics among the things that affect engagement, and notes that strong, relevant Pins "can resurface seasonally". Because Pins take weeks to gather distribution, seasonal Pins need to go out well before the moment they are for.

Season or eventPublish fromFormat ideaSize
Spring cleaning and gardeningLate winterChecklist teaser, step carousel2:3 image, 2:3 carousel
Summer travel and weddingsEarly springDestination photos, planning lists2:3 image
Back to schoolEarly summerSupply lists, room makeovers2:3 image, 9:16 video
Halloween and autumnLate summerCostume and recipe ideas2:3 image, short video
Winter holidays and giftingEarly autumnGift guides, recipes, decor2:3 image, carousel of products

These lead times are planning suggestions to adapt to your own analytics. A practical approach is to keep a seasonal folder of templates at the right sizes and refresh the photos each year, so last year's winners can be re-made as fresh images rather than re-saved.

Pre-publish checklist

  • Canvas is 1000 x 1500 px (or 1080 x 1920 px for video), and nothing important is below the 2:3 line.
  • Text sits outside the safe zones: 270 px top, 65 px left, 195 px right and 790 px bottom on full-screen Pins.
  • The overlay is readable at one-column phone width.
  • The title leads with the keyword and makes sense in 40 characters.
  • The description is under 500 characters and reads naturally.
  • Alt text describes the image and repeats any overlay text.
  • The link goes to the exact page the Pin promises, with a UTM tag.
  • The board is the most relevant one you have.
  • The file is sharp, under 20 MB, and not a copy of a Pin you already published.

Reusing images from other networks

Images made for other networks usually need adapting before they work on Pinterest.

Source imageProblem on PinterestFix
Landscape 16:9 (YouTube thumbnail, blog header)Tiny in the feedRebuild as 2:3 with the image on top and a text block below
Square 1:1 (Instagram)Works, but smallerExtend to 2:3 with a title band
4:5 portrait (Instagram, Facebook)Fine, slightly shortUse as is, or extend to 2:3
9:16 vertical (Reels, TikTok)Ideal for video, tall for imagesUse for video Pins; crop to 2:3 for image Pins

Our guides to Instagram aspect ratios and YouTube aspect ratios list those networks' sizes, and the social media image sizes guide covers the rest.

How to make a Pin at the right size: a step-by-step method

  1. Start from the search. Decide what someone would type to find this Pin, and write a title that works in 40 characters.
  2. Pick the format. Image Pin by default, video Pin for techniques and transformations, carousel for steps or variations.
  3. Set the canvas. 1000 x 1500 px for images, 1080 x 1920 px or 1080 x 1620 px (2:3) for video, 1000 x 1500 or 1000 x 1000 px for every card in a carousel.
  4. Mark the safe zones. On full-screen Pins keep text out of the top 270 px, left 65 px, right 195 px and bottom 790 px. On 2:3 image Pins, keep text in the upper two-thirds and well inside the edges.
  5. Design for a phone in two columns. One focal point, a five to eight word overlay at the top, high contrast, no more than two typefaces.
  6. Brand lightly. A small logo or URL, not a banner.
  7. Export cleanly. JPG for photos, PNG for text-heavy designs, sharp and under 20 MB. Compress large files with our image compressor.
  8. Write the words. Title up to 100 characters with the keyword first, description under 500 characters in natural sentences, and alt text that describes the image.
  9. Choose the board and link. The most relevant board, and the exact page the Pin promises.
  10. Schedule it, then make the next design. One fresh design for the same URL every week or two keeps the page in front of new people.

Copy-ready templates

Set these up once in your design tool and name each by ratio and purpose so anyone on the team can use them.

TemplateCanvasLayoutKeep clear
Photo with headline1000 x 1500 pxPhoto full-bleed, headline band in the top thirdAbout 50 px at each edge
Split Pin1000 x 1500 pxPhoto top 60%, solid text block bottom 40%Bottom 100 px for the small logo only

Step carousel5 x 1000 x 1500 px"Step 1 of 5" label, one photo per cardSame margins on every card
Vertical video1080 x 1920 pxHook text in the upper middle, captions mid-frameTop 270, left 65, right 195, bottom 790 px

Worked example: one blog post, five Pins

Consider a hypothetical home blog, Small Space Living, publishing an article on balcony gardens. Instead of one Pin, the writer plans five.

  • Week 1: a 2:3 photo of the finished balcony with "Small balcony garden ideas" in the top band.
  • Week 2: a split Pin, a close-up of herbs above and "7 herbs that grow in shade" below.
  • Week 3: a five-card carousel of the build steps, all 1000 x 1500 px.
  • Week 4: a 30-second vertical video of the planting, captions inside the safe zone.
  • Week 6: a new 2:3 photo taken a month later, showing growth.

Every Pin links to the same article with its own UTM tag. After three months, the writer compares outbound clicks by design and makes the winning style the default for the next article. The numbers will vary; the pattern of several fresh, correctly sized designs per URL is what the Tailwind data supports.

Common mistakes and how to fix them

  1. Pins taller than 2:3. The bottom may be cut off. Fix: 1000 x 1500 px, or split into a carousel.
  2. Landscape images. They shrink to a sliver. Fix: rebuild as 2:3.
  3. Text in the bottom safe zone. Buttons and captions cover it. Fix: keep text in the upper two-thirds.
  4. Long titles with the keyword at the end. Only about 40 characters show. Fix: keyword and benefit first.
  5. Relying on the description. It is not shown in home or search feeds. Fix: put the promise in the image and title.
  6. Blurry or stretched images. Pinterest warns these hurt. Fix: export at full size from the original file.
  7. Mixed ratios in a carousel. Fix: all 1:1 or all 2:3.
  8. Heavy branding. Big logos make Pins look like ads. Fix: a small logo or URL.
  9. Re-saving the same Pin repeatedly. Pinterest says this can be flagged as spam. Fix: create fresh designs instead.
  10. Square or landscape video. Tailwind found these performed poorly. Fix: 9:16 or 2:3.
  11. Pure white or black backgrounds that look grey. Display modes tint them. Fix: a tinted background or a thin border.
  12. Judging a Pin in its first week. Fix: wait two to three months before deciding a design failed.

How Postprism helps you publish Pins on a steady schedule

Pinterest rewards accounts that publish fresh Pins regularly. Pinterest's distribution page asks creators to "aim to create original content weekly", and its native scheduler, per its scheduling help page, lets you schedule up to 30 days ahead with up to 10 Pins scheduled at once. A scheduler makes a longer runway practical.

  • Schedule image Pins with everything they need. Postprism publishes image Pins with a board, title, description and destination link; the Pinterest publishing docs list the fields.
  • Plan Pins on the same calendar as everything else. Put the week's Pins next to your LinkedIn, X and YouTube posts on the content calendar, so a new article gets its Pins at the same time as its other posts.
  • Load months of designs at once. Bulk scheduling from CSV, XLSX or JSON, with a preview table, suits the many-designs-per-URL approach.
  • Keep sized assets in one place. Store your 2:3 designs in the media library ready to drop onto the calendar.

For timing, see our guide to the best time to post on Pinterest.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best Pinterest Pin size in 2026?

1000 x 1500 pixels at a 2:3 aspect ratio. Pinterest recommends it in its product specs and warns that Pins taller than 2:3 may be cut off in feeds.

Can I use square images on Pinterest?

Yes. 1:1 square Pins are allowed and carousel cards can be square, but a square Pin takes less space in the grid than a 2:3 Pin. Extend squares to 2:3 with a title band when you can.

What size should a Pinterest video be?

1080 x 1920 pixels at 9:16 for full-screen video, or 2:3. Pinterest also allows 1:2, 3:4, 4:5 and 1:1, and video Pins can run from 4 seconds to 5 minutes, with 15 to 60 seconds suggested.

What are the Pinterest safe zones?

Pinterest's Pin specs list 270 px at the top, 65 px on the left, 195 px on the right and 790 px at the bottom for full-screen Pins. Keep text and logos inside that area.

How long can a Pinterest title and description be?

Titles can be 100 characters, but only the first 40 are likely to show in feeds. Pinterest's Pin specs allow descriptions of up to 800 characters, while its creative best practices page says 500, so keeping descriptions under 500 is the safe choice.

How many images can a Pinterest carousel have?

2 to 5 images, all 1:1 or all 2:3. Pinterest says carousels can only be created on desktop.

What file types and sizes does Pinterest accept?

Image Pins can be BMP, JPEG, PNG, TIFF or WEBP, up to 20 MB on the web. Video Pins can be MP4 or M4V on the web (MOV in the app) with H.264 or H.265 encoding.

Can I schedule Pinterest Pins in advance?

Yes. Pinterest's own scheduler lets you schedule up to 30 days ahead, with up to 10 Pins scheduled at once. Postprism schedules image Pins with a board, title, description and link from one calendar alongside five other networks.
