Definition: Aspect ratio is the proportional relationship between an image or video’s width and height, written as width:height (for example 4:5 or 16:9).
Updated October 10, 2026
Each placement crops to its own shape. Upload a 16:9 image to an Instagram feed and the platform shows it small, with empty space; upload a 1:1 image to Stories and it floats in the middle. Taller formats (4:5, 9:16) take up more of the phone screen in feeds, which usually helps attention.
| Placement | Ratio | Pixels |
|---|---|---|
| Instagram feed (portrait) | 4:5 | 1080 × 1350 |
| Instagram / Facebook Stories, Reels, TikTok | 9:16 | 1080 × 1920 |
| Square post (all feeds) | 1:1 | 1080 × 1080 |
| LinkedIn / Facebook link preview | 1.91:1 | 1200 × 627 |
| X in-feed image | 16:9 | 1600 × 900 |
| YouTube video and thumbnail | 16:9 | 1280 × 720 or larger |
| Pinterest pin | 2:3 | 1000 × 1500 |
One product photo is exported three times: 1080 × 1350 for Instagram, 1200 × 627 for the LinkedIn link post and 1000 × 1500 for Pinterest, so nothing is cropped badly.
A safe zone is the part of an image or video frame that stays visible after the app overlays its buttons, captions and profile details.
A carousel post is a single post containing several images or videos that people swipe through, one slide at a time.
