What is alt text?

Definition: Alt text is a short written description of an image that screen readers read aloud, so people who cannot see the image still get its meaning.

Also called: alternative text, image description

How to write it

Describe what matters in the image for this post, in one or two sentences. Include any text that appears in the image. Skip “image of”; the screen reader already says it is an image.

Where to add it

Instagram, Facebook, LinkedIn, X, Bluesky and Pinterest all have an alt text field when you upload an image. Instagram also writes automatic alt text, but your own is more accurate.

Example

Weak: “coffee”. Better: “An iced oat latte on a wooden counter, with the text ‘Autumn menu, from Friday’ above it.”
