Later or Sprout Social: which one should you choose in 2026? Later vs Sprout Social, in short: choose Later if you are an Instagram and TikTok-first creator or brand who plans the feed visually and wants Reels, Stories, Snapchat and link in bio from $18.75 a month billed yearly; choose Sprout Social if you are a larger team that answers messages from a shared inbox, needs listening and competitor reporting, and can budget $79 to $399 per seat a month. If you post one brand to many networks, including X and Bluesky, and want one flat price, Postprism is the better fit for most small teams: all 6 networks for $19 a month, with a native version of every post written in one AI request.

Later and Sprout Social turn up on the same shortlists, but they are built for different people. Later grew out of Instagram planning and still leads with a visual calendar, a feed preview and link in bio. Sprout Social is a social suite for teams: publishing sits next to a consolidated inbox, review management, listening and reporting, and every user pays for a seat. This is an honest comparison of the two on what you will pay, which networks each publishes to, what the AI does, how analytics and approvals work, and whether you can connect an API or an AI agent. Every price and limit comes from the vendors' own pages, checked in October 2026 and linked inline. At the end we cover a third option for teams that mainly plan, write and schedule.

Key findings

  • Later is far cheaper to start. Later's pricing page lists Starter at $18.75, Growth at $37.50 and Scale at $82.50 a month, billed yearly. Sprout Social's pricing page lists Essentials at $79 per seat a month ($99 billed monthly), Standard at $199, Professional at $299 and Advanced at $399 per seat a month.
  • Later counts posts; Sprout counts seats and profiles. Later allows 30 posts per profile a month on Starter, 180 on Growth and unlimited on Scale. Sprout's Essentials and Standard plans include 5 social profiles; Professional and Advanced are unlimited.
  • Sprout covers more networks. Sprout lists Bluesky, Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, Pinterest, Reddit, Snapchat, Threads, TikTok, X and YouTube on its integrations page. A Later Social Set covers Instagram, Facebook, Threads, Pinterest, TikTok, LinkedIn, YouTube and Snapchat, without X or Bluesky.
  • Later is stronger on Instagram formats. Its pricing page lists Instagram Stories, Reels and Reels audio, Snapchat Spotlight and Stories, and Link in Bio on every plan.
  • Sprout is stronger on inbox and reporting. The consolidated inbox, review management and keyword monitoring start on Standard; competitor, tag and paid insights start on Professional. Listening and Premium Analytics are add-ons.
  • Neither lists an MCP server. Later's pricing and AI pages do not mention an API or MCP. Sprout's API is on Advanced and, per its developer docs, creates posts as drafts only.
  • Postprism costs $19 for one brand on all 6 networks, with unlimited posts, and moves to $49 or $99 only when you add brands or team members.

Pricing compared

The two tools price in opposite ways. Later charges per plan and sells extra capacity in small blocks. Sprout Social charges for every person who logs in, and its lower plans cap you at five social profiles. That difference matters more than any single feature, so it is worth working through real team sizes.

Later pricing (checked October 2026)

Later's pricing page lists three plans, each shown as "3 months free, 25% off" when billed yearly, with a 14-day free trial on all three:

  • Starter, $18.75 a month billed yearly: 1 Social Set (one profile on each of 8 networks), 1 user, 30 posts per profile a month, 5 AI credits a month and up to 3 months of Instagram analytics. Extra Social Sets, users and AI credits are not available on Starter.
  • Growth, $37.50 a month billed yearly: 2 Social Sets (16 profiles), 2 users, 180 posts per profile a month, 50 AI credits, up to 1 year of analytics, the social inbox, content approvals and UGC collection.
  • Scale, $82.50 a month billed yearly: 6 Social Sets (48 profiles), 4 users, unlimited posts, 100 AI credits, up to 2 years of analytics and Custom Analytics with shareable reports.

On Growth and Scale, an extra Social Set is $11.25 a month, an extra user is $3.75 a month, and 100 extra AI credits are $3.75 a month. The page shows a monthly billing toggle, but the prices it displays are the yearly-billed rates, so those are the figures we use.

Sprout Social pricing (checked October 2026)

Sprout Social's pricing page lists four priced plans and a custom Enterprise plan, all per seat, with a 30-day free trial:

  • Essentials, $79 per seat a month billed yearly or $99 billed monthly: 5 social profiles, optimal send times, profile and post-level reporting, and the Trellis AI agent with 100 agent credits per seat a month.
  • Standard, $199 per seat a month: 5 social profiles, plus the consolidated inbox and collaboration tools, keyword and location monitoring, and review management.
  • Professional, $299 per seat a month: unlimited profiles, message tagging, competitor, tag and paid insights, and Enhance Post by AI Assist.
  • Advanced, $399 per seat a month: everything in Professional, plus Enhance Reply by AI Assist, sentiment in the inbox and reviews, the Sprout API, helpdesk integrations, customer care reports and message spike alerts.

Premium Analytics and Listening are listed as add-ons for Standard and up, without a price on the page. Only Essentials shows both a yearly and a monthly price.

What each costs at real team sizes

The table uses the lowest plan on each vendor's page that covers the scenario, at the listed price. Later figures are billed yearly. Sprout figures use the listed per-seat price; where a team needs more than five profiles, that means Professional. Postprism is included for reference, since it is the third option we cover below.

ScenarioLaterSprout SocialPostprism
1 person, 1 brand, 5 networks$18.75 (Starter, 30 posts per profile a month)$79 (Essentials, billed yearly) or $99 monthly$19 (Solo, unlimited posts)
1 person, 1 brand on 6 or 8 networks$18.75 (Starter covers 8 networks, without X or Bluesky)$299 (Professional, since Essentials and Standard stop at 5 profiles)$19 (Solo, all 6 networks)
3 people, 3 brands$52.50 (Growth plus 1 Social Set and 1 user)$897 (3 Professional seats)$49 (Freelancer, with approvals)
10 people, 10 brands$150 (Scale plus 4 Social Sets and 6 users)$2,990 (10 Professional seats)$99 (Agency, with approvals and analytics CSV export)

The plain reading: Later is the cheaper of the two at every size we tested, often by a wide margin. Sprout's pricing only makes sense when the inbox, listening and reporting are things your team uses every day. A three-person team that only plans and schedules pays roughly seventeen times more on Sprout Professional than on Later Growth with add-ons. For a deeper look at how per-seat, per-channel and flat pricing compare across the market, see our guide to social media scheduling tool pricing.

Feature by feature

1. Publishing and networks

Later's scheduler page says it can schedule to "Instagram, Facebook, Pinterest, TikTok, LinkedIn, Threads, YouTube Shorts, and Snapchat from one calendar." Its pricing page lists Instagram posts, Stories and Reels, Facebook posts, and Snapchat Spotlight and Stories among the formats you can schedule. The visual calendar lets you drag, drop and rearrange posts and preview your Instagram feed before it goes live, which is still the main reason people pick Later. You can schedule to up to 10 social profiles at once and customise the post for each.

The gaps are the networks Later leaves out. X is not in a Later Social Set, Bluesky is not listed, and YouTube support is described as Shorts. If your audience is on X or you upload full-length YouTube videos, Later will not cover the whole week.

Sprout Social's integrations page lists Bluesky, Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, Pinterest, Reddit, Snapchat, Threads, TikTok, X and YouTube under social platforms, with Messenger and WhatsApp under messaging. Its publishing page describes a calendar for scheduling "across different profiles and networks simultaneously," a shared asset library with imports from Canva, Bynder, Adobe Experience Manager, Dropbox and Google Drive, and Optimal Send Times based on 16 weeks of audience data. The catch is the profile cap: on Essentials and Standard you get five profiles in total, so one brand on more than five networks pushes you to Professional.

Winner: Sprout Social on breadth, Later on Instagram-specific formats and the visual feed planner.

2. AI writing

Later's AI tools page describes a Caption Writer that drafts captions "in your brand's voice," an Ideas tab for post concepts and content pillars, and Best Time to Post. Caption Writer and Ideas share one monthly credit pool: each caption costs 1 credit and each credit returns 3 ideas. The pool is 5 credits a month on Starter, 50 on Growth and 100 on Scale, and Growth and Scale can buy 100 more for $3.75 a month.

Sprout's publishing page says AI Assist generates caption suggestions and alt text. Its pricing page lists the Trellis AI agent with 100 agent credits per seat a month on every priced plan, Enhance Post by AI Assist from Professional, and Enhance Reply by AI Assist on Advanced, which helps with inbox responses.

Neither tool describes writing a separate, native version of one post for every network in a single step. Both help you write a caption; you still adjust it for each network yourself.

Winner: Sprout Social, narrowly, for the per-seat credit allowance and reply drafting. Later's 5 credits on Starter run out quickly.

3. Analytics and reporting

Later's pricing page ties analytics history to the plan: up to 3 months of Instagram history on Starter, 1 year on Growth and 2 years on Scale. Every plan can share an Instagram performance report through a link, and Scale adds Custom Analytics to view all connected profiles in one place with filters and shareable reports. Link in Bio analytics are kept for 1 year on Starter and Growth and 2 years on Scale.

Sprout's reporting is deeper. Every plan includes profile and post-level reporting. Professional adds competitor, tag and paid insights; Advanced adds customer care reports and sentiment. Premium Analytics is an add-on from Standard. If you report to leadership on share of voice or paid performance, this is where Sprout earns its price.

Winner: Sprout Social.

4. Team and approvals

Later's Starter plan is one user with no approvals. Growth adds content approvals and 2 users, Scale has 4 users, and extra users cost $3.75 a month each. The pricing page describes approvals as "submit and approve posts, or request post approval within Later Social on the web."

Sprout's publishing page describes workflows that "guide internal and external team members through approving messages," so you can bring in a client or legal reviewer. The pricing page does not tie approvals to a specific plan. Every person who works in Sprout needs a seat, so a growing team grows the bill in $79 to $399 steps.

Winner: Sprout Social on approval depth, Later on the cost of adding people.

5. Inbox and engagement

Later's Social Inbox is on Growth and Scale only. It covers comments on Instagram, Facebook and TikTok, and direct messages on Instagram and Facebook.

Sprout's consolidated inbox starts on Standard and is the centre of the product for many teams: review management, message tagging from Professional, sentiment and spike alerts on Advanced, plus keyword and location monitoring and a Listening add-on. For customer care, Sprout is in a different class.

Winner: Sprout Social.

6. API, MCP and AI agents

More teams now want Claude, ChatGPT or another AI agent to draft and schedule posts for them, which needs an API or an MCP server. Later's pricing, scheduler and AI pages, checked October 2026, do not list a public API or an MCP server.

Sprout Social has a documented API on the Advanced plan at $399 a seat. Its developer docs say the API reads profile and post analytics and can create publishing posts, but "only posts created in draft status are supported at this time." We found no official Sprout Social MCP server; the MCP servers that exist for Sprout are community-built wrappers around its API.

Winner: Sprout Social, if you are on Advanced. Neither offers agent access on its entry plans. Our guide to scheduling tools for AI agents covers which tools do.

7. Extras: link in bio, UGC and mobile

Later includes Link in Bio with unlimited buttons and iOS and Android apps on every plan, and UGC collection from Growth. Sprout offers a link-in-bio landing page for Instagram on its publishing page and iOS and Android apps. For creators who sell from their bio, Later's version is the more central feature.

Winner: Later.

Who should choose Later

  • Instagram and TikTok-first creators and brands who want to see the grid before it goes live.
  • Anyone who schedules Reels, Stories, Snapchat Spotlight or Snapchat Stories.
  • Small teams who want approvals and a light inbox for $37.50 to $82.50 a month, billed yearly.
  • Creators who rely on link in bio and UGC collection.

Later is a weaker fit if you post to X or Bluesky, upload full YouTube videos, or post more than 30 times a month per profile on Starter.

Who should choose Sprout Social

  • Teams that answer customer messages and reviews from one shared inbox.
  • Brands that need listening, competitor reports, paid insights or sentiment.
  • Organisations with multi-reviewer approvals that include external stakeholders.
  • Teams that publish to Reddit or Snapchat alongside the main networks.
  • Budgets that allow $199 to $399 per seat a month for the plans that carry these features.

Sprout is a weaker fit if most of your work is planning, writing and scheduling: you pay for a suite you only partly use, and the 5-profile cap on Essentials and Standard bites as soon as one brand is on six or more networks.

A third option: Postprism

Many people comparing Later and Sprout Social do not need Instagram-only planning or an enterprise inbox. They need to publish one brand, or a handful of client brands, to every network they use, with a version of each post that fits that network, at a price that does not climb with every seat or profile. That is the job Postprism is built for, and for that job it is the better fit than either tool.

  • One brand on all 6 networks for $19. Every workspace connects one account on each of LinkedIn (profile or Company Page), X, TikTok, YouTube, Bluesky and Pinterest. Solo is $19 a month, Freelancer $49 for 3 members and 3 workspaces, and Agency $99 for 10 and 10, all with unlimited posts. More brands means more workspaces, not a per-profile fee. See pricing.
  • A native version for every network in one request. Write once and click Enhance with AI: Postprism returns a separate, editable version for every network you selected, shaped by your brand identity (industry, tone, values, audience and key messages). Plans include 150, 500 or 2,000 adaptations a month. See AI content adaptation.
  • Your AI agent can run it via MCP, on every plan. Postprism's hosted MCP server gives Claude, ChatGPT, Cursor and other MCP clients 11 tools to list accounts, upload media, create and edit posts and read analytics. Freelancer and Agency also include a REST API. See AI agents.
  • The networks Later leaves out. Postprism publishes to X (up to 4 images per post) and Bluesky, and uploads full YouTube videos with a title, tags, playlist and thumbnail, alongside TikTok video and photo posts, and image Pins.
  • Approvals without a per-seat bill. Owner, Admin, Editor and Viewer roles on every team plan, and an approval step on Freelancer and Agency, where Owners and Admins approve or request changes. Adding a teammate within the plan does not change the price. See team collaboration.
  • Calendar, bulk upload and analytics on every plan. A month, week and day calendar with a platform filter, Bulk Upload of a CSV up to 200 rows and 2 MB, and impressions, reach, clicks and engagement rate over 30, 60 or 90 days. Agency adds analytics CSV export.

Against the scenarios above, Postprism is $19 for one person on all 6 networks (Later $18.75 without X or Bluesky and with a 30-post cap per profile; Sprout $299), $49 for three people and three brands (Later $52.50; Sprout $897) and $99 for ten and ten (Later $150; Sprout $2,990). If you are leaving either tool, our head-to-head pages cover the details: Postprism vs Later and Postprism vs Sprout Social. For more two-way comparisons, see Later vs Buffer and Sprout Social vs Hootsuite.

The verdict

Later and Sprout Social are both good at what they were built for. Later is the better choice for Instagram and TikTok-first creators who plan visually, at a fraction of Sprout's price. Sprout Social is the better choice for larger teams whose day revolves around a shared inbox, listening and reporting, and who can pay per seat for it. For teams that mainly plan, write and schedule one brand or a few client brands across many networks, Postprism is our pick: all 6 networks for $19 a month, a version of every post for every network from one Enhance with AI request, approvals from $49 and an MCP server on every plan.

Which is better for Instagram, Later or Sprout Social?

Later, for most Instagram-first users. It schedules Instagram posts, Stories and Reels on every plan, previews your feed visually, and includes Link in Bio. Sprout publishes to Instagram too and adds a stronger inbox and reporting, but at a much higher price.

No. Later's scheduler page lists Instagram, Facebook, Pinterest, TikTok, LinkedIn, Threads, YouTube Shorts and Snapchat, and X is not part of a Later Social Set. Sprout Social and Postprism both publish to X.

Does Sprout Social have an MCP server?

We found no official Sprout Social MCP server as of October 2026. Community-built servers wrap the Sprout API, which is on the Advanced plan at $399 a seat and creates posts as drafts only. Postprism's MCP server, with 11 tools, is on every plan.

Sprout Social offers a 30-day free trial and Later a 14-day free trial on every plan. Postprism offers a 7-day free trial on every plan.

Solo is $19 a month for all 6 networks with unlimited posts, Freelancer is $49 for 3 members and 3 brands with approvals, and Agency is $99 for 10 and 10. One Enhance with AI request writes a version for every network, and the MCP server works on every plan.
