What is the best AI hashtag generator in 2026? Postprism is the best AI hashtag generator for anyone who actually publishes, because Enhance with AI writes each network's caption with hashtags sized to that network (two to five on LinkedIn, one or two on X, three to five on TikTok) in one request, across up to 6 networks. For a quick set without an account, our free Instagram hashtag generator and TikTok hashtag generator cost nothing.
The alternatives each suit someone specific. Hootsuite's free generator is a handy ChatGPT-powered one-off, Flick suits Instagram hashtag research, Later suits Instagram-first planners, Inflact suits photo-based ideas, RiteTag suits people who want suggestions inside any website, and Metricool suits teams that track a hashtag over time. This guide compares all ten using vendor pages checked in October 2026, and starts with the rule change that matters most: Instagram's five-hashtag cap.
| Rank | Tool | Best for | Starting price (checked October 2026) |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Postprism | Captions and hashtags written per network, then scheduled | $19/month, 7-day free trial; free hashtag tools |
| 2 | Hootsuite Hashtag Generator | A quick free AI set for one post | Free tool; Hootsuite plans from $99 per user |
| 3 | Flick | Instagram hashtag research and collections | From £11/month billed yearly |

| 10 | Sprout Social | Enterprise teams with AI Assist in the composer | From $79 per seat/month billed yearly |
Get captions and hashtags for every network in one click
Write once, press Enhance with AI, and get a version for each network with hashtags sized for it. Then schedule them all from one calendar.
Key findings
- Instagram now caps hashtags at five. Instagram said in December 2025 that it would "gradually update the number of hashtags that you can include in a caption for a reel or post to five", replacing the old limit of 30. Any generator that still hands you 30 tags for Instagram is working from an outdated rule.
- Instagram wants targeted tags, not generic ones. In the same announcement Instagram said that "using fewer (up to 5) more targeted hashtags, rather than many generic ones" can improve performance, and advised against tags like #reels and #explore.
- Vendors are catching up unevenly. Inflact's hashtag generator page already tells users Instagram allows only five hashtags per post, while Hootsuite's free generator recommends 3 to 5 for Instagram and 1 to 2 for X.
- LinkedIn rewards a handful. Most LinkedIn guidance lands on three to five hashtags per post, with more looking cluttered to a professional audience.
- Most "AI hashtag generators" are research tools. Flick, Display Purposes, Metricool and Inflact centre on searching and tracking Instagram tags. Only a few tools write hashtags into a finished caption for each network.
- Prices range from free to enterprise. Free tools from Postprism, Hootsuite and Inflact cover one-off needs; dedicated hashtag tools run from about £11 a month (Flick) to $65 a month (RiteKit); Sprout Social starts at $79 per seat a month billed yearly.
What changed for hashtags in 2026
The five-hashtag era on Instagram
For a decade, the standard Instagram advice was "use up to 30". Most hashtag generators were built around that number, and many still are: they return a block of 20 or 30 tags to paste into a caption or first comment. Instagram's December 2025 change makes that pattern actively harmful. Reports on the rollout say that if a post or comment includes more than five tags, the extra content may fail to post, and splitting tags between caption and first comment does not add slots. The job of a hashtag tool on Instagram is now to choose, not to fill.
Search replaced hashtags as the main discovery route
On Instagram, TikTok and Pinterest, captions and on-screen text now do much of the work hashtags used to do, because the platforms read the words in a post to understand it. Hashtags still help classify a post, but a clear first line with the right keywords matters as much as the tags at the end. Our guides to how the Instagram algorithm works and how the TikTok algorithm works cover how each feed reads a post.
Every network settled on its own norm
LinkedIn audiences tolerate a few professional tags. X readers treat more than one or two as noise. Facebook barely uses them. YouTube keeps keywords in a separate tags field and the description. A generator that gives you one list for every network will be wrong on most of them, which is why we rank tools that write hashtags per network above tools that only list tags.
AI moved into the composer
Two years ago, finding hashtags meant opening a separate tool, copying tags and pasting them back. Now the better tools generate tags as part of writing the caption, so the hashtags match what the post actually says. That is the approach behind Postprism's AI content adaptation, and it is the main reason it ranks first here.
How many hashtags to use on each network
Before you pick a tool, know the target. This table combines platform statements and the norms that most guidance agrees on, and shows what Postprism's Enhance with AI aims for on each network.
| Network | Hard limit or platform guidance | Practical target | What Postprism's AI writes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Up to 5 per post, rolled out from December 2025 | 3 to 5 targeted tags | Hashtags in the caption; keep the final set to five | |
| TikTok | No strict count; caption length is the limit | 3 to 5 relevant tags | 3 to 5 hashtags |
| No strict count; most advice says 3 to 5 | 2 to 5 professional tags | 2 to 5 professional hashtags | |
| X | 280 characters per post; tags count toward it | 0 to 2 tags | 1 or 2 optional hashtags |
| No strict count; rarely used | 0 to 2 tags | Minimal hashtags | |
| YouTube | Separate tags field plus description | Keywords in tags and the first lines | Uses the tags field instead of hashtags |
| Threads | Topic tags rather than hashtag blocks | One clear topic | Write the version yourself or edit the AI draft |
| Keywords in title and description matter most | Searchable phrases rather than tags | Write the version yourself or edit the AI draft |

How we evaluated AI hashtag generators
We looked at each tool through the eyes of someone who has to post today, not someone building a hashtag spreadsheet. Five questions decided the ranking:
- Per-network output. Does the tool give LinkedIn, X, TikTok and Instagram different hashtag sets, or one list for everything?
- Relevance to the post. Are tags generated from what the caption says, or from a single keyword typed into a box?
- Respect for current limits. Does it steer you toward five tags on Instagram, or still encourage 30?
- Distance to publishing. After generating, how many steps until the post is scheduled? Copying tags between tabs is where mistakes happen.
- Price for the job. What does it cost to get good hashtags on every post, and is there a free option for occasional use?
We used each vendor's own pricing and feature pages as of October 2026, plus Postprism's own product. Where a vendor page did not state a capability, we say so rather than guess. Two tools we considered, Keyhole and Hashtagify, are covered at the end: Keyhole's pricing page now sends visitors to a Muck Rack demo request, and Hashtagify's site refused our connection when we checked.
The 10 best AI hashtag generators, ranked
1. Postprism: best overall AI hashtag generator
What it is. Postprism is a social media scheduler that publishes to 6 networks (LinkedIn, X, TikTok, YouTube, Bluesky and Pinterest) from one content calendar, with AI built into the composer.
How it generates hashtags. You write the core post once and select your networks. Press Enhance with AI and one request returns a version for every selected network, each written to that network's style guidelines, hashtags included. The guidelines in the product ask for two to five professional hashtags on LinkedIn, one or two optional hashtags on X and three to five on TikTok, and for YouTube the AI fills the tags field instead of adding hashtags to the description. Because the tags are written with the caption, they match what the post actually says rather than a single seed keyword. You edit any version before it schedules.
Standout features.
- One request, every network. LinkedIn, X, TikTok and YouTube each get a version with their own tone, length and hashtag style. See multi-platform posting.
- Brand Identity guides the writing. The AI uses your brand name, industry, default tone, values, target audience and key messaging, so tags lean toward your niche instead of generic high-volume terms. See brand voice AI.
- Length warnings. If a version runs over a network's limit, the text turns red, so tags never quietly push an X post past 280 characters.
- Scheduling in the same place. The tagged versions go straight onto the content calendar, with a time zone set per post, then publish to each network.
- Free hashtag tools. No account needed for our Instagram hashtag generator and TikTok hashtag generator, covered in the next section.
- Agent access. The MCP server (11 tools) is on every plan, so an assistant like Claude can draft and schedule posts for you. See AI agents.
Who it is for. Creators, small businesses, freelancers and agencies who post to two or more networks and want hashtags that fit each one without a separate research step. Pricing: Solo is $19 a month (150 AI adaptations), Freelancer $49 (500) and Agency $99 (2,000), or $14, $36 and $75 a month billed annually, with unlimited posts on every plan and a 7-day free trial.
Postprism's free hashtag generators
Not every post needs a full workflow. Sometimes you want a set of tags for one Instagram photo or one TikTok and nothing else. For that, Postprism has two free tools that need no account:
- Instagram hashtag generator. Type a topic or niche, choose how many tags you want, and copy a clean, deduplicated list. The tool matches your topic against curated hashtag sets for about two dozen niches, from fitness, food and travel to real estate, finance and parenting, adds variations built from your own keyword, and tops up with broader tags. Given the five-tag cap, generate a set, then keep the five most specific to your post.
- TikTok hashtag generator. The same approach, tuned for TikTok, where three to five relevant tags help the For You feed understand a video. Pair it with the TikTok caption generator for the caption itself.
These free tools are template and list based rather than AI, which makes them instant and predictable: the same topic gives you a consistent set you can trim. When you want tags written around a specific caption, and a version for each network, that is what Enhance with AI inside Postprism is for. There is also a free Instagram caption generator if you want the caption and the tags from the same place.
Stop pasting the same hashtags everywhere
Postprism writes a version of each post for every network, with hashtags that fit LinkedIn, X and TikTok, and schedules them together.
2. Hootsuite Hashtag Generator: best free AI generator for a single post
What it is. A free web tool from Hootsuite, listed among its free social media tools. Hootsuite says it is "powered by ChatGPT" and uses a built-in prompt around your input.
How it works. Pick a network from a dropdown (the page lists Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, TikTok, LinkedIn, Pinterest and YouTube), describe your image or video, and add keywords. The tool returns a set of suggested hashtags. The page also gives per-network guidance, such as 3 to 5 hashtags for Instagram and 1 to 2 for X.
Limits. It produces tags for one network at a time, and Hootsuite warns that the tool "may display inaccurate or offensive material", so review the output. It does not write the caption or schedule the post. Hootsuite's paid plans start from $99 per user a month billed annually, with a 14-day trial, per the plans page checked October 2026.
Who it is for. Anyone who needs a quick, free AI-generated set for one post and is happy to write the caption and publish separately. Compare Hootsuite's full suite on our Hootsuite alternative page.
3. Flick: best for Instagram hashtag research
What it is. A social media tool that grew out of Instagram hashtag research and now includes scheduling, analytics and an AI assistant called Iris.
Hashtag features. Flick's pricing page lists Suggested Hashtags, Hashtag Search, Hashtag Collections, Advanced Hashtag Metrics, Smart Auditing, a Randomizer, Hashtag Import and CSV Export, plus Hashtag Performance under Instagram analytics. The homepage says its Hashtag Search "works in 20+ languages", and it links a Banned Hashtag Checker. Testimonials point to being able to compare a hashtag's potential reach with its popularity.
Pricing. Solo is £11 a month, Pro £24 and Agency £55, billed yearly and excluding tax, with a 7-day free trial on every plan, as checked October 2026. Solo tracks hashtags on 30 posts per Instagram account a month; Pro and Agency are unlimited.
Limits. The hashtag tooling is centred on Instagram. With Instagram's five-tag cap, large saved collections and randomizers matter less than they did, so judge Flick on how well its research narrows a list to the right five.
Who it is for. Instagram-led brands and creators who want to research tags in depth, see which tags they rank for, and keep organised sets for recurring themes.
4. Later: best for Instagram-first visual planners
What it is. A visual social media planner, strongest on Instagram, with hashtag tools built into the scheduler.
Hashtag features. Later's pricing page lists Hashtag Suggestions (search for hashtags for Instagram and Facebook posts), Auto Hashtag Suggestions (Instagram suggestions based on your caption), Saved Captions for reusable caption and hashtag text, and Instagram First Comment on every plan. Future Insights, which covers upcoming hashtags and trending topics, is on Scale only.
Pricing. Starter is $18.75 a month, Growth $37.50 and Scale $82.50, billed yearly, as checked October 2026. AI credits are limited: Starter includes 5 a month, Growth 50 and Scale 100, where one credit writes one caption or three ideas.
Limits. The hashtag tools are Instagram and Facebook focused, and the small AI credit allowance on Starter limits how much caption writing the AI does for you. The old habit of putting 30 tags in a first comment no longer works on Instagram.
Who it is for. Brands whose identity lives on Instagram and who want hashtag suggestions inside a visual grid planner. See how it compares on our Later alternative page.
5. Inflact: best for hashtag ideas from a photo or post URL
What it is. A set of Instagram tools, including a hashtag generator with three input methods.
How it works. According to Inflact's hashtag generator page, you can enter up to five keywords, paste an Instagram post URL, or upload a photo that the AI analyses. Results are grouped as frequent, average or rare, which helps you mix one broader tag with more specific ones. The page states that Instagram now allows only five hashtags per post.
Pricing. Inflact calls the generator "a free marketing tool", while its pricing page says the Pro plan includes the Hashtag Generator. The pricing page lists Research at $34 a month and Pro at $59 a month, but its FAQ gives different figures ($22 and $79), so confirm before buying. Checked October 2026.
Limits. Instagram only, and the frequent, average and rare labels describe how popular a tag is, not how relevant it is to your post. Photo-based suggestions describe what is visible, which is not always what the post is about.
Who it is for. Instagram users who start from an image and want ideas they would not have typed themselves, especially in visual niches like food, travel and fashion.
6. RiteTag (RiteKit): best for suggestions inside any website
What it is. RiteTag is the hashtag tool inside RiteKit, a bundle of social media utilities.
How it works. RiteKit describes "instant suggestions for images and text anywhere on the web and on mobile", with a browser extension where you right-click an image or selected text to get hashtag suggestions on sites including Instagram, Pinterest and Buffer. There is also a separate banned hashtags tool on ritetag.com.
Pricing. RiteKit sells "just one plan, all-inclusive". Its help centre lists the RiteKit Package at $65 a month or $650 a year, with unlimited team seats at the same price, as checked October 2026. Hashtag Reports are not included in shared seats.
Limits. One price covers a whole bundle of tools, which is good value if you use several and expensive if you only want hashtags. The extension suggests tags where you are writing, but the caption, the per-network versions and the scheduling still happen elsewhere.
Who it is for. People who write posts in many different places (native apps, a scheduler, a CMS) and want hashtag help in all of them through one browser extension.
7. Metricool: best for tracking a campaign hashtag
What it is. A planner and analytics tool priced by brand, with a separate Hashtag Tracker.
Hashtag features. Metricool's Hashtag Tracker follows a hashtag on X and Instagram in real time, shows where and how it is used and who the most active accounts are, and builds reports you can download as PDF or PPT. Its pricing page includes a Hashtag Search Engine on Starter and above.
Pricing. A free plan covers one brand with 20 posts a month (excluding LinkedIn and X) and 5 AI credits. Starter starts at about $20 a month and Advanced at about $53 a month on the lower, likely annual, price set, as checked October 2026. Starter includes 20 AI credits per brand a month.
Limits. Tracking tells you how a tag performed; it does not pick the tags for your next post. The pricing page did not state the cost of hashtag tracking itself.
Who it is for. Marketers running an event or campaign hashtag who need to report on it, and agencies that send clients hashtag reports. See our Metricool alternative comparison.
8. Display Purposes: best for Instagram hobbyists checking banned tags
What it is. An Instagram growth tool. Its homepage lists hashtag search and performance tracking, an AI assistant for post ideas, caption generation, Reels metrics, profile analytics and a banned hashtags checker.
Pricing. The site offers a 3-day free trial. The plan prices were not shown on the page when we checked in October 2026.
Limits. Instagram only, and with prices not shown up front you will need to start the trial to see the cost.
Who it is for. Individual Instagram accounts that want to check whether a tag is restricted before using it, and to see which tags their posts appear under.
9. ChatGPT: best for brainstorming tags in a general assistant
What it is. OpenAI's general-purpose assistant, which many people already use to write captions and can ask for hashtags in the same conversation. ChatGPT has a free plan, with paid plans on OpenAI's pricing page.
How to use it well. Paste the caption, name the network, give the limit ("five hashtags for Instagram, specific to a neighbourhood bakery in Leeds, no generic tags like #food") and ask for a short reason for each tag. The reason exposes weak picks.
Limits. A general assistant does not know your brand unless you tell it every time, has no idea what has worked on your account, and leaves you to copy each version into the right place. It can also invent tags that nobody uses, so search a tag before you rely on it. Our AI prompts for social media guide has prompts that work.
Who it is for. People who already pay for an assistant and post occasionally, or who want to brainstorm angles before writing. If you would like an assistant to schedule the result too, see the best AI agents for social media.
10. Sprout Social: best for enterprise teams with AI in the composer
What it is. An enterprise social media suite covering publishing, engagement, listening and reporting.
AI features. Sprout's pricing page lists "Enhance Post by AI Assist" on the Professional and Advanced plans. The pricing page does not say whether AI Assist writes hashtags, so test that in the trial.
Pricing. Essentials is $79 per seat a month billed yearly ($99 monthly), Standard $199, Professional $299 and Advanced $399, with a 30-day free trial, as checked October 2026. AI Assist for posts starts on Professional.
Limits. A large price for hashtag help alone. It makes sense when hashtags are a small part of a wider need for inbox, listening and governance.
Who it is for. Large teams already evaluating an enterprise suite. Compare it on our Sprout Social alternative page.
Also considered: Keyhole and Hashtagify
Keyhole was long known for real-time hashtag tracking. When we checked in October 2026, its pricing page redirected to a Muck Rack social listening demo request, so it now sits inside an enterprise listening product rather than a self-serve hashtag tool. Hashtagify, a hashtag research site, refused our connection when we tried to load its pricing, so we could not verify its current plans and left it out of the ranking.

"Not stated" means the vendor page we read did not say. Those are the exact things to check in a trial: write one post, generate tags for three networks and see what you get.
How to choose an AI hashtag generator
Start with where you post
- Instagram only. A research tool like Flick or a planner like Later is a reasonable fit, or our free Instagram hashtag generator if you only need a set now and then. Whatever you use, finish with five tags.
- TikTok and Instagram. You need three to five tags per video on each, written for each audience. Postprism writes the TikTok version and its tags in one request; the free TikTok hashtag generator handles one-offs.
- LinkedIn, X and the rest. These networks punish hashtag walls. A tool that writes per network, like Postprism, saves you from trimming one long list by hand every time. See our LinkedIn scheduler and X scheduler pages.
Then decide whether you need research or writing
Hashtag tools split into two jobs. Research tools (Flick, Display Purposes, Metricool's tracker, Inflact) tell you about tags: how popular they are, whether they are restricted, how a campaign tag is spreading. Writing tools (Postprism, Later's auto suggestions, Hootsuite's generator, ChatGPT) give you tags for a specific post. Most people need the second job every day and the first job occasionally. If you run branded campaigns or report on hashtags to clients, add a research tool; otherwise a writing tool is enough.
Count the steps to publish
Every copy and paste between tools is a chance to paste the wrong set onto the wrong network. The fewer steps between "generate" and "scheduled", the fewer mistakes. In Postprism, the tags arrive inside each network's version on the calendar, and nothing needs to move.
Check the price against your volume
Occasional posters should start with free tools. Daily posters should look at what each plan includes: Postprism's Solo plan includes 150 AI adaptations a month, where one adaptation produces versions for all selected networks, while Later's Starter includes 5 AI credits a month.
By who is posting
| You are | Best pick | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Content creator | Postprism | Captions and tags for TikTok and YouTube from one draft. See Postprism for content creators. |
| Small business owner | Postprism, plus the free tools | One flat price for all 6 networks and unlimited posts. See Postprism for small business. |
| Freelancer with clients | Postprism Freelancer | 3 workspaces, one per client brand, each with its own Brand Identity, and approvals. See Postprism for freelancers. |
| Agency | Postprism Agency, plus Metricool for campaign tracking | 10 workspaces and 2,000 AI adaptations a month. See Postprism for agencies. |
| Instagram specialist | Flick or Later | Deep Instagram hashtag research or a visual grid with suggestions |
| Occasional poster | Postprism free tools or Hootsuite's free generator | No account or plan needed |
Worked example: one post, hashtags for three networks
Crumb & Co. is a small bakery that has just launched a sourdough subscription. The owner writes one core post in Postprism: "Our new sourdough subscription starts Monday. A fresh loaf every week, baked that morning, collected from the shop or delivered within three miles." She selects LinkedIn, X and TikTok and presses Enhance with AI. Her Brand Identity says the business is a neighbourhood bakery with a friendly tone, aimed at local families and remote workers.
| Network | Version (shortened) | Hashtags |
|---|---|---|
| A short story about why the bakery moved to subscriptions: less waste, steadier mornings for the team, and a fixed weekly bake that suits local offices. | #SmallBusiness #Sourdough #LocalBusiness | |
| X | "Fresh sourdough, every week, baked that morning. Our subscription starts Monday." | #Sourdough |
| TikTok | A caption for a 20-second video of the first bake: "POV: your bread is still warm when you pick it up." | #sourdough #bakingtiktok #smallbusiness |
She checks that the X version is well under 280 characters, and schedules all three versions for Monday at 7am in her time zone. Total time: about 15 minutes, including the edit. Doing the same with a separate hashtag tool means three lookups, three copies and three chances to paste a 20-tag list onto LinkedIn.
The free tools fit the same week. On Wednesday she posts a one-off Instagram photo of a new pastry from her phone, so she uses the free Instagram hashtag generator with the topic "pastry", picks five tags and pastes them in.
How to pick the right five hashtags
A generator gives you candidates. Choosing the final set is still your job, and with Instagram's five-tag cap, each slot matters. A simple mix works on most networks:
- One topic tag that names exactly what the post is about (#sourdough, not #food).
- One or two niche tags where your ideal follower already looks (#breadsubscription, #homebaking).
- One local or community tag if place matters (#leedsfood, #shoplocal).
- One branded tag if you run a campaign or community that people actually use.
- Drop anything generic. Instagram itself advises against tags like #reels and #explore.
Then search each tag on the network before using it. A tag full of unrelated or spammy posts will not put you in front of the right people. Our guide to getting more Instagram followers covers discovery beyond hashtags, and the reach glossary entry explains what tags can and cannot change.
Common hashtag mistakes AI tools make (and how to fix them)
- Thirty tags for Instagram. Older tools and older advice still default to 30. Fix: keep five.
- One list for every network. A TikTok set pasted onto LinkedIn looks out of place. Fix: generate per network, or use a tool that writes each version separately.
- Generic, high-volume tags. #love and #instagood put your post in a feed nobody browses. Fix: favour specific and niche tags.
- Tags that do not match the post. Single-keyword generators drift. Fix: generate from the full caption, as Postprism does, or give a general assistant the whole caption and the audience.
- Invented tags. AI can produce tags that nobody uses. Fix: search each tag before relying on it.
- Hashtags that break the length limit. On X, tags count toward 280 characters. Fix: check length, or use a composer that flags over-limit text, like Postprism's red warning.
- Hashtags in place of keywords. Captions are now read for search. Fix: put the key phrase in the first line of the caption too.
- Hashtags on YouTube descriptions instead of tags. Fix: use the tags field and a keyword-rich description. Our free YouTube description generator helps with the second part.
- Repeating the same set on every post. Identical blocks look automated. Fix: keep one or two constants and vary the rest with each post's topic.
- Judging tags without checking results. Fix: compare reach and engagement on posts with different tag sets after a few weeks.
Measuring whether your hashtags work
Hashtags are one input among many, so judge them over a batch of posts rather than one. Postprism's analytics show impressions, reach, clicks, engagement rate and top posts for X, YouTube, LinkedIn Pages and TikTok over 30, 60 or 90 days, so you can compare posts that used different tag sets side by side.
| What you see | What it suggests | What to try |
|---|---|---|
| Reach well above your follower count | The post is being shown to non-followers, possibly through tags or topics | Reuse the topic and tag style |
| Reach close to follower count | Little discovery beyond your audience | Use more specific tags and a clearer first line |
| High reach, low engagement rate | The tags reached the wrong people | Swap broad tags for niche ones |
| High saves on Instagram | The content is useful to the people it reached | Keep the tag mix and post more on the topic |
Compare impressions and reach on similar posts with different tag sets over a few weeks. One post proves nothing; a pattern across ten does.
The verdict
Postprism is the best AI hashtag generator in 2026 because it treats hashtags as part of writing each network's post: one press of Enhance with AI returns a version for every selected network with hashtags sized for it, guided by your Brand Identity, and the versions go straight onto your calendar for up to 6 networks from $19 a month. For one-off posts, our free Instagram and TikTok hashtag generators need no account. Hootsuite's free generator is a good single-post option, Flick and Later suit Instagram specialists, and Metricool suits teams that track campaign hashtags. If you are also choosing a tool for the caption itself, see our ranking of the best AI caption generators.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the best AI hashtag generator?
Postprism, for anyone posting to more than one network, because Enhance with AI writes each network's caption with hashtags sized for it, two to five on LinkedIn, one or two on X and three to five on TikTok, and then schedules every version. For a quick free set, use Postprism's free Instagram or TikTok hashtag generator.
How many hashtags should I use on Instagram in 2026?
Up to five. Instagram began rolling out a five-hashtag limit in December 2025, replacing the old limit of 30, and recommends fewer, more targeted tags over generic ones like #reels or #explore.
Is there a free hashtag generator?
Yes. Postprism's Instagram and TikTok hashtag generators are free and need no account, and Hootsuite offers a free ChatGPT-powered hashtag generator. Inflact also describes its Instagram hashtag generator as free.
Do hashtags still work on LinkedIn and X?
A few do. Most LinkedIn guidance suggests three to five relevant hashtags, and on X one or two at most, since tags count toward the 280-character limit. Postprism's AI follows these norms when it writes each version.
Does Later suggest hashtags?
Yes. Later's pricing page lists Hashtag Suggestions for Instagram and Facebook and Auto Hashtag Suggestions for Instagram based on your caption, on every plan from Starter at $18.75 a month billed yearly, as checked October 2026.
Can ChatGPT generate hashtags?
Yes, if you give it the caption, the network and a limit. It does not know your brand or results unless you tell it, and it can invent tags nobody uses, so search each tag before posting. A scheduler with built-in AI, like Postprism, keeps the tags with each network's version and schedules them.
Should hashtags go in the caption or the first comment?
On Instagram, both count toward the same five-tag limit, so putting them in a comment no longer gives you extra slots. Most people now keep a short set in the caption.
Can AI write captions and hashtags together?
Yes. In Postprism, Enhance with AI returns a caption with hashtags for every selected network in one request, from 150 AI adaptations a month on the $19 Solo plan, with a 7-day free trial.
