The TikTok metrics and KPIs that matter most in 2026 are average watch time as a share of video length, the percentage who watched the full video, shares per view, new followers per video and the share of views from the For You feed and search. TikTok says finishing a video is a strong signal. Track three of these monthly against your own median.
TikTok Analytics, now inside TikTok Studio, gives you views, likes, comments, shares, saves, play time, traffic sources, search terms, follower data and more. Most of it is useful, but very little of it tells you why one video reached 300 people and the next reached 30,000. This guide explains each metric, the rates that let you compare videos fairly, what the 2026 benchmarks say about accounts like yours, the KPIs to choose for each goal, format and account type, how to read the retention graph and traffic sources, a step-by-step method for setting targets, the mistakes that make TikTok reports misleading, and a one-page monthly report.
Key findings: TikTok metrics and KPIs in 2026
- Completion is the strongest signal TikTok has described. TikTok's own explanation of the For You feed gives "whether a user finishes watching a longer video from beginning to end" as its example of a strong signal, and says "neither follower count nor whether the account has had previous high-performing videos are direct factors".
- Engagement is roughly flat, and high. Buffer's State of Social Media Engagement 2026 puts TikTok's 2025 median engagement rate at about 4.5%, up about 3% from 2024, while Instagram's fell 26%.
- Small accounts are getting fewer views. Socialinsider's 2026 TikTok benchmarks, from about 2 million videos across 214,507 profiles, show average views per video for accounts with 1,000 to 5,000 followers falling from 860 in 2024 to 350 in 2025, while accounts with 100,000 to 1 million followers rose from 25,198 to 34,900.
- Everyone is posting more. In the same data, accounts with 10,000 to 50,000 followers went from 9 to 16 videos a month, and the largest accounts from 15 to 23.
- Video beats photo posts on reach and engagement. Metricool's 2026 TikTok study of 2,314,756 posts found "video gets 5x more views and 6x more interactions than images", and Buffer's 2026 format data puts video at a 3.39% median engagement rate vs 1.92% for photo posts.
- The For You feed is most of the audience. Metricool also found "the For You Page drives 7 out of every 10 views".
- TikTok pays for minutes and search value. The Creator Rewards Program rewards content "over a minute long" on "four core metrics: originality, play duration, search value and audience engagement".
The single most useful TikTok KPI is retention: average watch time divided by video length. It tells you whether the video held attention, it compares fairly across lengths, and it maps directly to the signal TikTok describes as strongest.
What has changed in TikTok analytics in 2026
A US algorithm retrained on US data
In January 2026, TikTok confirmed the TikTok USDS Joint Venture, and Social Media Today reported that "the Joint Venture will retrain, test, and update the content recommendation algorithm on U.S. user data", hosted in Oracle's US cloud. For US accounts, this is a reason to treat early 2026 as a possible break in your trend lines. If your reach changed noticeably around then, compare like with like after the change rather than against 2025.
Viewers can tune their feeds more
In June 2025 TikTok launched Manage Topics, which lets viewers adjust how often more than 10 popular topics appear, plus smart keyword filters; TikTok says keyword filters had already been used to filter over 200 million words. In November 2025 it added a slider to see less AI-generated content. For metrics, this means some of the audience can now dial down whole categories, which makes niche relevance and originality more important to reach.
Posting volume rose sharply
Socialinsider's benchmarks show average posting frequency up about 40% from 2024 to 2025. More supply means more competition per view, which is part of why small accounts saw views per video fall even while engagement rates held.
Photo posts grew faster than video
Metricool's 2026 study found "+72% videos and +140% image/carousels published by Metricool users". Photo posts are being published at a much faster rate, but they still earn fewer views per post, so mixing them into your reporting without separating formats will drag your averages down. Our guide to making TikTok slideshows covers when photo posts are still the right tool.
TikTok Studio became the creator hub
Analytics now lives in TikTok Studio on mobile and web, and TikTok is adding pre-publish tools there: in July 2025 it said Content Check Lite is "rolling out through TikTok Studio on the web", after a similar pre-check for TikTok Shop sellers led to a 27% reduction in low-quality uploads.
How to access TikTok Analytics
Analytics is available to Creator and Business accounts. Switching is free under Settings and privacy, then Account. According to Buffer's September 2026 guide to TikTok analytics, the Followers tab needs at least 100 followers to populate, though there is no follower minimum for analytics overall. On mobile, open your profile, tap the menu and go to TikTok Studio, then Analytics. On desktop, use TikTok Studio on the web.
Date ranges vary by tab. Sprout Social's TikTok analytics guide lists 7, 28, 60 or 365 day ranges (or a custom range) for content metrics, and 7, 28 or 60 days for the Overview tab. Sprout also notes native data updates about once a day with a delay, and native TikTok analytics offers no direct export, so if you want history, copy your numbers into a sheet every month.
Reading the Overview tab without fooling yourself
The Overview tab is the first thing you see, and the easiest to misread. It shows video views, profile views, likes, comments, shares and follower change for the selected period, usually as a line chart with a comparison to the previous period.
Look at the shape, not the total
A period total can be driven by one video. Before you celebrate or worry, open the Content tab and check whether the change came from many videos or just one. A broad rise means your content is improving; a spike means one video found an audience, which is worth studying but not worth extrapolating.
Compare equal periods
Compare 28 days with the previous 28 days, not a month with 31 days against one with 28. Weekly charts are noisy because posting days vary; monthly views are more stable for reporting.
Pair profile views with follower change
Profile views tell you how many people were curious enough to look; net followers tell you how many decided to stay. If profile views rise but followers do not, your profile is the bottleneck: the bio, pinned videos or first few thumbnails are not convincing visitors. Pin your three best-performing videos by retention, and make the bio say plainly what people will get by following.
Watch net followers, not new followers
New followers minus unfollows is the honest number. A spike in unfollows after a change of topic is useful feedback; do not hide it.
Every TikTok metric worth knowing, defined
The definitions below are drawn from TikTok Studio's labels and the guides by Buffer, Sprout Social and Hootsuite, which describe the same tabs.
| Metric | Where | What it counts | Use it for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Video views | Overview, Content | Times your videos were watched | Visibility |
| Reached audience | Content | Unique accounts the video was shown to | The denominator for rates |
| Profile views | Overview | Visits to your profile | Curiosity about you |
| Likes, comments, shares, saves | Overview, Content | Interactions on each video | Engagement rate numerator |
| Total play time | Content | Cumulative watch time across all viewers | Total attention earned |
| Average watch time | Content | Average seconds watched per view | Retention, the key quality signal |
| Watched full video | Content | Share of viewers who watched to the end | Completion |
| Retention curve | Content | Share of viewers still watching at each second | Finding the exact drop-off point |
| Traffic source | Content | For You, Following, profile, search, sound, DMs and others | How the video was discovered |
| Search queries | Content | Terms that led people to the video | Search value and captions |
| New followers | Content | Follows gained from the video | Which videos convert viewers |
| New vs returning viewers | Viewers | First-time viewers vs people who have seen you before | Reach into new audiences |
| Most active times | Followers | Hours and days your followers are on TikTok | Scheduling |
The reached audience figure works like reach on other networks, so use it as the denominator for follow rate. Hootsuite defines new viewers as people who saw one of your posts for the first time in the past year, and returning viewers as people who had seen a post in the past year and came back in the selected period. That split is one of the best signals of whether you are growing or just re-reaching the same people.
The formulas that compare TikTok videos fairly
| KPI | Formula | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Retention rate | Average watch time / video length x 100 | Compares holding power across lengths |
| Completion rate | Watched full video (as reported) | The strong signal TikTok describes |
| Engagement rate by views | (Likes + comments + shares + saves) / views x 100 | Matches Socialinsider's benchmark method |
| Share rate | Shares / views x 100 | Content people pass on travels further |
| Save rate | Saves / views x 100 | Reference value, often linked to search |
| Follow rate | New followers from video / reached audience x 100 | Which topics build an audience |
| For You share | For You views / total views x 100 | How much the algorithm is recommending you |
| Search share | Search views / total views x 100 | Whether videos are found by intent |
| Follower growth rate | Followers gained / followers at start x 100 | Matches Socialinsider's growth method |
Hootsuite's guide uses a slightly different engagement rate (likes, comments and shares divided by views or followers), so always say which formula you used when you compare with anyone else. The free TikTok engagement rate calculator handles the common versions, and our engagement rate glossary entry explains the differences.
How to read the TikTok retention graph
The retention curve shows the share of viewers still watching at each second. Every curve falls; the shape tells you why.
A cliff in the first two seconds
The hook failed. The opening frame, first line or first sound did not give a reason to stay. Fix the first two seconds before anything else: start with the payoff, a bold claim or a visible problem, and keep opening text clear of the interface using a TikTok safe zone checker.
A steady slope
Normal decay. Viewers leave gradually as interest fades. Tighten pacing, cut pauses and remove any section that repeats the point.
A sudden mid-video drop
Something specific lost people: a tangent, a slow transition, a long text card or a "but first" detour. Find the second and cut what happens there.
A rise near the end
People are rewatching, usually because there was a reveal, a fast list or text they could not read in time. Rewatches help, but if text is the cause, make it readable.
A flat curve that ends early
Great retention on a very short video. Test a slightly longer version, because the Creator Rewards Program only rewards content over a minute, and longer videos earn more total play time.
Traffic sources: what each one tells you
| Source | What it means | If it is high | If it is low |
|---|---|---|---|
| For You | TikTok recommended the video | The video is working with strangers | Hook or topic is not landing beyond followers |
| Following | Shown to people who follow you | Loyal audience, but limited growth | Followers are not engaged with this topic |
| Personal profile | People came from your profile | Another video drove curiosity | Profile is not a destination yet |
| Search | Found by a search query | Evergreen value, keep the topic going | Captions and on-screen text lack search terms |
| Sound | Found via the audio page | The sound is helping discovery | Normal for original audio |
Search matters more each year. Pew found that a fifth of US adults regularly get news on TikTok in 2025, up from 3% in 2020, and 43% of adults under 30. People who use TikTok to find information type queries, so the search queries list in your Content tab is free keyword research. Put those terms into your on-screen text and captions; our TikTok caption generator can help draft variations.
TikTok benchmarks in 2026 by account size
Socialinsider's 2026 benchmarks are the most detailed public set by follower count. They use engagement rate by views and follower growth calculated on starting followers.
| Followers | Engagement rate by views (2025) | Views per video (2025) | Shares per video | Videos per month | Follower growth (2025) |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1K to 5K | 4.40% | 350 | 40 | 8 | 150% |
| 5K to 10K | 4.00% | 945 | 60 | 12 | 115% |
| 10K to 50K | 3.90% | 3,240 | 120 | 16 | 60% |
| 50K to 100K | 3.75% | 9,900 | 200 | 18 | 45% |
| 100K to 1M | 3.95% | 34,900 | 477 | 23 | 30% |
Three readings. First, engagement rates are similar at every size, so an engagement rate far below about 4% by views is a content signal, not a size problem. Second, the gap in views between small and large accounts widened sharply in 2025. Third, growth rates are still high for small accounts in percentage terms, because they start from a small base. Socialinsider reports a platform-level engagement rate of 4.20% for 2025 and 3.85% for the first half of 2026, so do not panic if your 2026 numbers are a little lower than last year's.
TikTok KPIs broken down by goal
Reach and awareness
KPIs: views per video, For You share, new viewers. A rising For You share is the clearest evidence that TikTok is recommending you beyond followers.
Audience growth
KPIs: follow rate per video, net followers, returning viewers. Find which topics convert viewers into followers and make a series of them.
Engagement and community
KPIs: comment rate, share rate, replies to comments. Video replies to comments are a cheap way to turn one good video into several.
Search and evergreen traffic
KPIs: search share, save rate, views after day 7. Videos found by search keep earning for weeks, which matters for "search value" in the Creator Rewards Program.
Traffic and sales
KPIs: profile views, bio link clicks, tagged sessions and conversions, plus TikTok Shop metrics (product clicks, completed orders, gross merchandise value) where available. Tag your bio link with UTM parameters using our UTM builder.
TikTok KPIs broken down by video type and length
Short videos under 30 seconds
Judge them on completion and share rate. Short videos should have high completion; if they do not, the hook is the issue.
Videos from 30 seconds to 1 minute
Judge on retention rate and the retention curve. This is the length where mid-video drops show up most clearly.
Videos over 1 minute
Judge on average watch time in seconds, total play time and follows. Completion rates will be lower; that is expected. Buffer's guide notes videos of 3 to 10 minutes performed better on engagement and watch time in its data, so longer formats are worth testing if your retention holds.
Photo posts
Judge on saves, shares and comments, not views. Buffer's 2026 data puts photo posts at a 1.92% median engagement rate vs 3.39% for video, so compare photo posts only with other photo posts.
LIVE
Judge on unique viewers, top viewer count, new followers during the live and, where available, gifts. LIVE metrics live in their own tab and are not comparable with videos.
| Type | Primary KPI | Secondary KPI | Rough rule of thumb |
|---|---|---|---|
| Under 30 seconds | Completion | Share rate | Most viewers should reach the end |
| 30 to 60 seconds | Retention rate | Retention curve shape | No sharp mid-video cliff |
| Over 1 minute | Average watch time (seconds) | Total play time, follows | Watch time keeps rising as you test longer |
| Photo posts | Saves and shares per view | Comments | Compare with other photo posts only |
| LIVE | Unique viewers | New followers | Compare with your previous lives |
TikTok KPIs broken down by account type
Creators
Track follow rate, For You share and, if you are in the Creator Rewards Program, qualified views and RPM, which TikTok shows on dedicated pages. Eligibility requires being 18 or over, 10,000 followers and 100,000 views in the last 30 days.
Consumer brands
Track share rate and profile views, plus tagged traffic and sales. Pew's 2025 data shows 63% of US adults aged 18 to 29 use TikTok (Pew fact sheet), so for younger audiences TikTok is often the main awareness channel.
B2B companies
TikTok reaches 44% of US adults aged 30 to 49 in Pew's data, so B2B can work, mostly through education and employer brand. Track search share, saves and profile views rather than sales.
Local businesses
Track profile views, comments that ask "where is this?" and visits mentioning TikTok. Location-specific captions and on-screen text help search.
TikTok Shop sellers
Track product link clicks, completed payments and gross merchandise value next to share rate, because product videos that get shared tend to keep selling.
KPIs by industry: a starter set
| Industry | Primary KPI | Secondary KPIs | Formats that usually move it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ecommerce and DTC | Share rate | Product clicks, tagged conversions | Demos, unboxings, customer reactions |
| Food and hospitality | Profile views | Search share, comments asking location | Behind the counter, menu reveals |
| B2B SaaS and services | Search share | Saves, profile views | Explainers, myth busting, day in the life |
| Education and coaching | Follow rate | Retention rate, saves | Lessons, series, video replies |
| Beauty and fashion | Share rate | Completion, comments | Tutorials, try-ons, transformations |
| Real estate and local services | Profile views | Search share, DMs | Tours, neighbourhood guides, FAQs |
Metrics that mislead on TikTok
Some TikTok numbers look important and are not, or are important only in context.
Total likes on your profile
The lifetime likes count on your profile is a vanity number. It says nothing about whether your recent content is working, and one old viral video can dominate it. Ignore it in reports.
Follower count on its own
TikTok states plainly that follower count is not a direct factor in recommendations. A video from an account with 400 followers can reach far more people than one from an account with 40,000 if it holds attention. Track follows per video instead, because that tells you which content builds an audience.
Views on videos under a few seconds long
Very short loops can rack up views from replays without anyone watching anything meaningful. If you post them, judge them by shares and comments.
Engagement rate by followers
Dividing interactions by follower count makes small accounts with one viral video look extraordinary and large accounts with a quiet week look broken. Use engagement rate by views, which is also how Socialinsider builds its TikTok benchmarks.
A single viral video
One video with 50 times your normal views will distort every monthly average. Use medians, or report the outlier separately and explain it.
TikTok metrics vs Instagram metrics: what transfers and what does not
Most teams post the same vertical video to TikTok and Instagram Reels, so it is tempting to compare the numbers directly. Some metrics transfer; others are measured too differently to compare.
| Measure | TikTok | Compare directly? | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Views | Video views | Views, including repeat views, across all formats | Only for video vs Reels, and with caution |
| Unique audience | Reached audience | Reach (estimated) | Yes, as a rough guide |
| Retention | Average watch time, watched full video, retention curve | Average watch time on Reels | Yes, as a percentage of length |
| Passing on | Shares | Shares (sends) | Yes, per view or per reach |
| Discovery source | For You, Following, search, sound, profile | Followers vs non-followers | Only at a high level |
| Median engagement (Buffer 2026) | About 4.5% | About 5.5% | Same method, so yes |
Audience matters too. Pew's 2025 survey of 5,022 US adults found 37% use TikTok and 50% use Instagram, and about half of adults aged 18 to 29 use TikTok daily. The same video can therefore reach a younger, more daily audience on TikTok and an older, broader one on Instagram, and differences in retention or shares between the two often reflect who is watching rather than the video itself.
Using TikTok analytics to choose posting times
The Followers tab shows the hours and days your followers are most active. It is the most direct timing data you will get, because it is about your audience rather than an average across millions of accounts. Two cautions. First, most views come from the For You feed rather than followers, so follower activity is a starting point, not a rule. Second, the times are shown in your account's time zone, so check where your audience actually is in the follower location data before you schedule. Test two or three slots for a month, log the views at day 7 for each, and keep the best one.
Reporting TikTok to clients and stakeholders
Clients and managers rarely care about retention curves. They care about whether TikTok is worth the effort. Translate the KPIs:
- Retention rate becomes "people are watching most of each video, which is why TikTok is showing them to more people".
- For You share becomes "seven in ten views came from people who did not follow us yet".
- Search share becomes "people are finding us by searching for questions our product answers".
- Follow rate becomes "this series is building an audience we can reach again for free".
Then show one outcome number they already track: sign-ups, sales, bookings or enquiries from TikTok-tagged links. If the outcome is not trackable, say so and show the leading indicators trending in the right direction.
How to set TikTok KPIs and targets: a step-by-step method
- Switch to a Business or Creator account so Analytics is available.
- Choose one goal and three KPIs. One for reach (For You share or views), one for quality (retention rate or share rate) and one for outcome (follows, search share or conversions).
- Build a tracking sheet. One row per video: date, topic, length, hook, format, views, reached audience, average watch time, watched full video, likes, comments, shares, saves, new followers and the For You and search share.
- Log every video after 7 days. Many videos keep earning for days, so a fixed check-in point keeps comparisons fair. Buffer suggests waiting at least 24 hours before analysing a new post.
- Calculate retention rate and share rate. Sort by each to find your top 10%.
- Name the pattern. What do the top videos share: topic, hook style, length, on-screen text, sound? Write it in one sentence.
- Set relative targets. Aim for a 10 to 20% improvement on your 90 day median, not someone else's average.
- Plan a series. Turn the pattern into four to six videos on the same theme and put them on your calendar.
- Run one test a week. Change one thing (hook, length or format) and compare against your median.
- Review monthly. Update the report, keep what worked, drop what did not.
Worked example: diagnosing three videos
A fictional home coffee equipment shop with 6,000 followers posts three videos in a week. These numbers are illustrative.
| Video | Length | Views | Avg watch time | Retention | Shares | For You share | Search share |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| "3 mistakes ruining your pour-over" | 38s | 14,800 | 24s | 63% | 310 | 81% | 6% |
| New grinder unboxing | 55s | 1,900 | 14s | 25% | 8 | 42% | 3% |
| "How fine should espresso grind be?" | 72s | 5,200 | 41s | 57% | 66 | 48% | 29% |
The mistakes video is the reach winner: strong retention, lots of shares, mostly For You. The unboxing lost three quarters of viewers early and barely left the follower base, so the hook is the problem. The espresso question is the sleeper: lower views but a 29% search share, which means people are looking for exactly this answer. Next month: a "mistakes" series of four videos, the unboxing remade to open with the result (a shot of finished espresso), and three more question-led videos titled with the exact search terms from the Content tab.
A one-page monthly TikTok report
- Headline sentence. "Views up 22% on the back of the mistakes series; search share doubled after we started titling videos as questions."
- Three KPIs vs last month and target.
- Top three videos by your quality KPI, with one line on why.
- Retention lessons. One sentence on the most common drop-off point this month.
- Search terms that brought viewers, for next month's titles.
- Next month's plan. Three changes, each tied to calendar slots.
If you report Instagram and TikTok together, use the same layout for both; our guide to Instagram metrics and KPIs follows this structure, and our broader guide to social media metrics and KPIs shows how to roll several networks into one page.
How to plan and publish from your TikTok data with Postprism
Analytics only pays off if it changes what you post. Postprism is a social media scheduler that publishes to 6 networks from one calendar, including TikTok video and photo posts, either as a direct post or as a draft sent to your TikTok inbox to finish in the app.
- Batch the series. Film four videos in one session, upload them, and place them on the content calendar at your followers' most active times. The TikTok scheduler page covers setup, and our best time to post on TikTok guide gives starting slots.
- Load a month at once. Bulk scheduling takes a CSV, XLSX or JSON file with captions, times and media links, with a preview before anything is scheduled.
- See results next to the plan. Postprism's analytics pulls per-post views, likes, comments and shares for published TikToks alongside your other networks, so the monthly report starts from one place.
Plan Next Month's TikToks in One Sitting
Use what your analytics tell you, schedule the next batch, and let Postprism publish your TikTok videos and photo posts on time, alongside every other network you use.
Common mistakes with TikTok metrics, and how to fix them
- Judging by views alone. Views reflect distribution, not quality. Fix: lead with retention rate and share rate.
- Comparing average watch time across lengths. 15 seconds is great on a 20 second video and poor on a 2 minute one. Fix: use retention rate as a percentage of length.
- Checking too early. Many videos pick up views over several days. Fix: log every video at the same point, such as day 7.
- Mixing photo posts and videos in one average. Photo posts earn fewer views and lower engagement in Buffer's and Metricool's data. Fix: report them separately.
- Ignoring the search queries list. It is free keyword research. Fix: copy the top terms monthly and use them in titles and on-screen text.
- Treating follower count as the goal. TikTok says follower count is not a direct ranking factor. Fix: track follow rate per video to learn which topics build an audience.
- Not saving history. Native analytics has limited date ranges and no export. Fix: copy key numbers into a sheet monthly, or use a tool that stores them.
- Chasing someone else's engagement rate. Formulas differ between sources. Fix: compare against your own median and name your formula.
- Deleting underperforming videos. You lose the data and the chance of a late pickup through search. Fix: keep them, learn from the retention curve and remake the idea.
- Posting more without a plan. Volume is rising across TikTok, so more posts alone do not stand out. Fix: increase volume only for formats with retention above your median.
- Ignoring the 2026 algorithm change in the US. Trend lines may break around the joint venture's retraining. Fix: annotate your sheet and compare like periods.
- Not acting on the report. Fix: every report ends with three calendar changes that you check off next month.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is a good engagement rate on TikTok in 2026?
Socialinsider's 2026 benchmarks put the platform average at 4.20% of views for 2025 and 3.85% for the first half of 2026, with smaller accounts slightly higher. Buffer puts the 2025 median at about 4.5%. Around 4% by views is typical; compare against your own median first.
What is a good average watch time on TikTok?
There is no official benchmark. Measure it as retention: average watch time divided by video length. Compare each video with your own median retention, and look for videos that beat it by a clear margin.
Which TikTok metric matters most?
Retention and completion. TikTok describes finishing a longer video from beginning to end as a strong signal. Shares and follows per video come next, because they show the video was worth passing on and worth following for.
Do I need a Business account for TikTok Analytics?
You need a Business or Creator account; both are free to switch to. The Followers tab only populates once you have 100 followers.
How far back does TikTok Analytics go?
Content metrics can be viewed for 7, 28, 60 or 365 days or a custom range, according to Sprout Social, while the Overview tab offers 7, 28 or 60 days. Because there is no native export, keep your own monthly record.
Why are my TikTok views going down?
Possible causes include more competition (posting volume rose about 40% in 2025), the US algorithm retraining in 2026, a shift towards formats that earn fewer views such as photo posts, or weaker hooks. Check your retention curves and For You share before changing strategy.
What does For You share tell me?
It is the percentage of a video's views that came from the For You feed. A high share means TikTok recommended the video to people who do not follow you, which is how accounts grow.
Can I track TikTok metrics alongside other networks?
Yes. TikTok Studio only covers TikTok, so teams posting to several networks usually use a tool that brings metrics together. Postprism shows per-post views and engagement for the TikToks it publishes, next to your other networks and the calendar you plan from.
