Buffer vs Sprout Social: which should you choose in 2026? Buffer vs Sprout Social, in short: choose Buffer if you are one person or a small team that mainly schedules posts, wants a free plan to start, and is happy paying $5 to $10 a month per channel; choose Sprout Social if you run customer care or a larger marketing team that needs a consolidated inbox, review management, listening and competitor reporting, and can budget $79 to $399 per seat a month, billed yearly. If what you actually need is one brand published natively to many networks at a flat price, a third option, Postprism, does that for $19 a month on all 6 of its networks, with an AI version for every network and an MCP server for AI agents on every plan.

Buffer and Sprout Social are both established, well-run products, but they are built for different jobs and they charge in opposite ways. Buffer is publishing-first and charges for every connected channel. Sprout Social is an all-in-one suite for publishing, engagement, listening and reporting, and charges for every person who logs in. This is a fair, side-by-side comparison using only what each vendor publishes on its own pricing, feature and help pages, all checked in October 2026, with links so you can check the figures yourself.

Pricing compared

The single biggest difference between the two tools is the unit of pricing. Buffer counts channels. Sprout Social counts seats. That one choice decides which tool is cheaper for you far more than any feature does.

Buffer pricing (checked October 2026)

Buffer's pricing page lists three plans:

PlanPriceUsersWhat stands out
Free$0, up to 3 channels110 scheduled posts per channel, 30 days of insights history, AI Assistant, 1 API key with 3,000 requests a month
Essentials$5 a month per channel ($60 per channel billed yearly)1Unlimited scheduled posts, advanced analytics and reports, custom UTM parameters, 3 API keys with 7,500 requests a month
Team$10 a month per channel ($120 per channel billed yearly)UnlimitedApproval workflows, custom access and permissions, branded reports, 5 API keys with 15,000 requests a month

Channels above 10 cost less per channel, though the page does not list the discounted rate. Paid plans come with a 14-day trial, and if you upgrade from Free you pay for every connected channel, including the first three.

Sprout Social pricing (checked October 2026)

Sprout Social's pricing page lists four published plans and a custom Enterprise plan, all priced per seat:

PlanPrice per seat a monthProfilesWhat stands out
Essentials$79 billed yearly, $99 billed monthly5Profile and post-level reporting, Trellis with 100 AI agent credits per seat a month

Advanced$399 billed yearlyUnlimitedThe Sprout API, helpdesk integrations, inbox sentiment, message spike alerts, team productivity reports

Listening and Premium Analytics are add-ons available from Standard, with no price shown on the page. Sprout offers a 30-day free trial with annual billing afterwards.

What each costs at real team sizes

Because one tool counts channels and the other counts people, the fairest comparison is a handful of realistic setups. The table uses each vendor's list price and the lowest plan that covers the setup. Postprism is included as a reference point, priced by brand (workspace) and team member, with one account per network in each workspace.

SetupBufferSprout Social (billed yearly)Postprism
1 person, 3 channels$0 (Free) or $15 (Essentials)$79 (Essentials)$19 (Solo)
1 person, 5 channels$25 (Essentials)$79 (Essentials)$19 (Solo)
1 person, one brand on 6 networks$30 (Essentials)$299 (Professional, since lower plans stop at 5 profiles)$19 (Solo)
3 people, 10 channels, approvals$100 (Team)$897 (3 seats on Professional)$49 (Freelancer, 3 members and 3 brands)
10 people, 20 channels, approvalsUp to $200 (Team, with volume discount above 10)$2,990 (10 seats on Professional)$99 (Agency, 10 members and 10 brands)

Where Buffer wins on price: at every size in this table. Buffer is the cheaper of the two for one person on three channels (free), and it stays far below Sprout Social as teams grow, because adding a person to Buffer Team costs nothing while every Sprout seat costs $79 to $399. Where Sprout Social can make sense: when one or two people run a big engagement operation across many profiles, because Sprout Professional's unlimited profiles mean channel count no longer moves the bill. Where both cost more than they need to: one brand on many networks. Buffer reaches $30 a month for 6 channels, and Sprout needs Professional at $299 once you pass 5 profiles, while Postprism Solo is $19 for all 6 of its networks.

Feature by feature

1. Publishing and networks

Both tools cover the main networks, and each has a few the other lacks. Buffer's supported channels are Facebook Pages (Groups via notification publishing), Instagram business and creator accounts, X, LinkedIn Pages and profiles, Pinterest business accounts, TikTok, Google Business Profiles, Start Page, Mastodon, YouTube Shorts, Threads, Bluesky and Substack (Notes only). TikTok and Instagram personal accounts publish via notification.

Sprout Social's integrations page lists Bluesky, Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, Pinterest, Reddit, Snapchat, Threads, TikTok, X and YouTube, plus Facebook Messenger and WhatsApp for messaging. Its publishing page describes a calendar for scheduling many posts across profiles at once, an asset library that imports from Canva, Bynder, Adobe Experience Manager, Dropbox and Google Drive, and Optimal Send Times, which looks at 16 weeks of audience data to suggest when to post.

For bulk work, Buffer is clearer about the details. Buffer's bulk upload takes a CSV on every plan, up to 10 posts per channel per upload on Free and 100 on paid plans. It supports text and single-image posts only, and not YouTube, video or carousels.

Edge: a draw that depends on your networks. Pick Buffer for Mastodon, Google Business Profile or Substack; pick Sprout for Reddit, Snapchat or messaging channels.

2. AI writing and AI agents

Buffer's AI Assistant helps you brainstorm ideas, rewrite content and craft platform-specific posts, adjusting tone and length for LinkedIn, Threads, X, Instagram, Bluesky and more. It is free and unlimited, even on the Free plan. AI reply suggestions in the community inbox are capped at 5 a week on Free and unlimited on paid plans.

Sprout Social has two layers. AI Assist, described on the publishing page, generates caption suggestions and alt text, and Enhance Post by AI Assist is listed on Professional and up. Trellis is Sprout's AI teammate for turning social data into insights, trends and next steps, with 100 AI agent credits per seat a month on every plan.

Edge: Buffer for writing help on a budget, since its assistant costs nothing. Sprout for AI that reads your data, since Trellis works across reporting rather than just drafting. Neither page describes writing a separate version for every selected network in a single request, which is the gap Postprism's Enhance with AI fills (more on that below).

3. Analytics and reporting

Buffer keeps 30 days of insights history on Free, and Essentials adds unlimited history, advanced analytics, a performance overview, custom analytics, reports and custom UTM parameters. Team adds branded reports with your logo and a cover page. Buffer's channel guide notes that analytics are not available for Facebook Stories or Instagram Reels because of API limits.

Reporting is where Sprout Social earns much of its price. Every plan has profile and post-level reporting. Professional adds competitor, tag and paid insights. Advanced adds team productivity and social customer care reports. Premium Analytics, an add-on from Standard, goes further still.

Edge: Sprout Social, clearly. If reporting to leadership or clients across competitors and paid campaigns is part of your job, Buffer is not built for that depth.

4. Team and approvals

On Buffer, Free and Essentials are single-user plans. Team adds unlimited team members, content approval workflows and custom access and permissions, at $10 a month per channel. Because users are free on Team, a ten-person team pays the same as a two-person team with the same channels.

Sprout Social's publishing page describes message approval workflows that guide internal and external team members through approving posts, and sharing queued posts with outside stakeholders for sign-off. Every person who logs in is a paid seat, so team size drives the bill directly.

Edge: Buffer on cost, Sprout on depth. Sprout's external reviewers suit brands with legal or client sign-off; Buffer Team is the far cheaper way to give a whole team access with approvals. For more options, see our guide to approval workflow tools.

5. Inbox and engagement

Buffer's pricing page lists a community inbox on every plan, with saved replies (1 on Free, unlimited on paid) and AI reply suggestions. It is aimed at replying to comments without leaving Buffer.

Sprout Social is an engagement platform first. Standard adds a consolidated inbox with collaboration tools, keyword and location monitoring and review management. Professional adds message tagging. Advanced adds sentiment in the Smart Inbox and Reviews, message spike alerts and helpdesk integrations. Listening is an add-on from Standard.

Edge: Sprout Social, by a wide margin. If a team answers customers on social all day, Sprout is the stronger tool, and this is usually the deciding reason teams pay its price.

6. API and MCP for AI agents

Buffer includes API keys on every plan: 1 key with 3,000 requests a month on Free, 3 keys with 7,500 on Essentials and 5 keys with 15,000 on Team. Buffer's Claude integration page also describes an official remote MCP server at mcp.buffer.com/mcp for drafting posts, reviewing the queue and scheduling from Claude, though it does not say which plans include it.

Sprout Social lists the Sprout API on the Advanced plan, at $399 a seat a month billed yearly. Neither its pricing page nor its integrations page lists an MCP server (checked October 2026).

Edge: Buffer. Agent and API access start on the free plan, while Sprout reserves its API for its most expensive published tier. Our guide to scheduling tools for AI agents covers the wider field.

Who should choose Buffer

  • Creators and solo marketers posting to one to three channels who want a free plan to start.
  • Small teams that mainly schedule posts and want unlimited users with approvals on Team, without per-seat pricing.
  • Anyone who publishes to Mastodon, Google Business Profile, Start Page or Substack Notes.
  • People who want free, unlimited AI writing help and API access from the free plan.

Who should choose Sprout Social

  • Customer care and community teams who answer messages and reviews from one inbox every day.
  • Brands that rely on listening, competitor reports and paid insights, and report to leadership on them.
  • Teams that publish to Reddit or Snapchat, or handle Messenger and WhatsApp conversations.
  • Organisations with a per-seat budget of $199 or more and a need for SSO and priority support on Enterprise.

A third option: Postprism

Many teams comparing Buffer and Sprout Social do not need an enterprise inbox and do not want a bill that grows with every channel. They need one brand, or a few, published well to every network, with each network getting a post written for it. That is the job Postprism is built for, and for that job it is the better fit than either.

  • Flat pricing that counts neither channels nor seats. Solo is $19 a month (1 member, 1 workspace), Freelancer $49 (3 members, 3 workspaces, approvals, REST API) and Agency $99 (10 members, 10 workspaces, approvals, API, analytics CSV export), with unlimited posts on every plan and a 7-day free trial. Each workspace connects one account per network, so one brand on all six networks is $19. See pricing.
  • A version for every network in one request. Write once, click Enhance with AI, and Postprism returns a separate, editable version for every network you selected, shaped by your saved brand identity (name, industry, tone, values, audience and key messages). Plans include 150, 500 or 2,000 adaptations a month. See AI content adaptation.
  • Six networks, published natively. LinkedIn profiles and Company Pages, X posts with up to 4 images, TikTok video and photo posts, full YouTube uploads with title, tags, playlist and thumbnail, Bluesky text posts and Pinterest image Pins. See multi-platform posting.
  • AI agents on every plan. Postprism's hosted MCP server gives Claude, ChatGPT, Cursor and other MCP clients 11 tools to list workspaces, upload media, create and edit posts and read analytics. See AI agents.
  • The working parts teams need. A calendar with month, week and day views, a kanban board, Bulk Upload of a CSV with up to 200 rows and 2 MB per file on every plan, Owner, Admin, Editor and Viewer roles, one approval step on Freelancer and Agency, and analytics for 30, 60 or 90 days on every plan.

If your team lives in a social inbox or relies on listening, Sprout Social remains the right suite for that work. If you are mostly planning, writing and scheduling, Postprism gives every network its own post for a flat price. The verdict

Buffer and Sprout Social are not really rivals at the same price. Buffer is the affordable, publishing-first choice: a real free plan, $5 to $10 per channel, free AI help, unlimited users on Team and API access from the free plan. Sprout Social is the engagement and reporting suite: a consolidated inbox, review management, listening, competitor and paid insights, at $79 to $399 per seat. Choose Buffer if scheduling is the job and budget matters; choose Sprout Social if answering customers and reporting on social is the job. And if the job is publishing one brand natively to many networks at a flat price, with AI that writes every network's version at once and an MCP server for your agents, choose Postprism.
