What is employee advocacy?

Definition: Employee advocacy is when a company’s staff share its news, content and their own expertise on their personal social media accounts, so the brand reaches their networks through people those networks already trust.

Also called: employee amplification, staff advocacy

Participation rate
Participation rate = employees who shared at least once ÷ employees invited × 100

Why it works

People respond to people. A post from an engineer about what their team shipped reads as more credible than the same news from a Company Page, and it reaches that engineer’s own connections, many of whom never follow the brand. On LinkedIn in particular, personal profiles are where most professional conversation happens.

How to run a program

  • Keep it voluntary and say clearly what employees can and cannot share.
  • Supply ideas and assets, not word-for-word scripts; posts in a person’s own voice perform better.
  • Make it easy: a short weekly list of stories, images and links.
  • Ask people to disclose that they work for the company when they promote it.
  • Recognise contributors and share what worked.

How to measure it

Track the number of active participants, the reach and engagement of their posts, and clicks to your site through UTM-tagged links. Compare engagement on employee posts with the same content posted from the Company Page.

Example

A 60-person software company invites 40 staff to share a product launch. 18 post about it on LinkedIn in their own words, a participation rate of 45%. Their posts bring more clicks to the launch page, tracked with one UTM campaign, than the Company Page post does.
