Amplification rate
Amplification rate = shares ÷ followers × 100

Where the metric comes from

Analytics author Avinash Kaushik proposed amplification as one of four social metrics in 2011, alongside conversation, applause and economic value. His version is simply shares per post (retweets on X, shares on Facebook, share clicks on YouTube). Dividing by followers, as most marketers now do, turns it into a rate you can compare across accounts of different sizes.

What counts as a share

Use the platform’s own share action: reposts on X, LinkedIn and Bluesky, shares on Facebook, Instagram and TikTok. Sends in direct messages count as shares on some platforms and not on others, so note what you included and use the same rule every month.

Amplification rate vs virality rate

Amplification rate divides shares by followers, so it tells you how willing your existing audience is to pass content on. Virality rate divides shares by impressions, so it tells you how share-worthy the post was to everyone who saw it, followers or not.

Worked example

A LinkedIn Page with 8,000 followers publishes a post that is reposted 48 times. Amplification rate = 48 ÷ 8,000 × 100 = 0.6%.
