Every number in your analytics is a metric. A metric becomes a KPI when it is tied to a goal and has a target: “reach” is a metric, “grow average organic reach per post on LinkedIn by 20% this quarter” is a KPI. Most teams need three to five KPIs, not thirty.
Start from the business goal, pick the metric closest to it that you can measure reliably, take your own last 90 days as the baseline, and set a target and a review date. Report the same KPIs the same way every month so trends are visible.
| Goal | KPI | Target |
|---|---|---|
| Awareness | Average LinkedIn reach per post | +20% in Q4 |
| Engagement | Engagement rate by reach | 3% or higher |
| Traffic | UTM sessions from social | 1,500 a month |
| Conversion | Demo requests from social | 30 a month |

Vanity metrics are numbers that are easy to grow and look impressive, such as total followers, likes or views, but that do not show whether social media is meeting a business goal or tell you what to do next.
Social media ROI (return on investment) is the value earned from social media activity, minus what it cost, expressed as a percentage of that cost.
Engagement rate is the percentage of people who interacted with a post (liked, commented, shared, saved or clicked) out of the people who saw it or follow the account.
Conversion rate is the percentage of people who completed a goal, such as a purchase, sign-up or download, out of everyone who clicked or visited from a given source.
