What are vanity metrics?

Definition: Vanity metrics are numbers that are easy to grow and look impressive, such as total followers, likes or views, but that do not show whether social media is meeting a business goal or tell you what to do next.

How to spot one

The same number can be a vanity metric in one report and useful in another. Ask three questions about it.

  • Does it connect to a goal, such as sales, leads, sign-ups or retention?
  • Would a change in it make you do something differently?
  • Can it rise without anything real improving, for example through bought followers or a one-off giveaway?

Common vanity metrics and better alternatives

Swap totals for rates and outcomes. Rates show quality, and outcomes show value.

They are not useless

Followers and views still matter for awareness, social proof and as the top of the funnel. The problem is reporting them alone. Pair each one with a rate or an outcome, and state the goal the report is measuring.

Vanity metrics and what to report instead
Vanity metricMore useful alternative
Total followersFollower growth rate, reach per post
Total likesEngagement rate by reach, save rate
ImpressionsClick-through rate, CPM for paid
Video viewsWatch time, completion rate
Link clicksConversion rate, revenue from UTM-tagged visits
Example

An account reports 50,000 new followers from a giveaway. Reach per post stays flat and engagement rate falls from 3% to 1.2%, because most new followers joined for the prize. The follower count went up; the account did not get better at reaching its audience.
