Definition: Short-form video is vertical video, usually under three minutes, made to be watched full screen on a phone in a feed that plays the next clip automatically, such as TikTok, Instagram Reels and YouTube Shorts.
Also called: short video, vertical video, shorts
Updated October 11, 2026
TikTok made the format mainstream; Instagram Reels and YouTube Shorts followed, and LinkedIn, Facebook and Threads also show vertical video in their feeds. Each app recommends clips to people who don’t follow the account, so a single video can reach far beyond the follower count.
Platforms define “short” differently and the limits keep growing. Per YouTube’s help centre, a video counts as a Short if it is square or vertical and up to three minutes long (for uploads from 15 October 2024). Instagram raised Reels to three minutes in January 2025. Length limits change often, so check the app before planning longer cuts.
Distribution depends on how much of the video people watch, so structure matters more than production value.
| Format | Maximum length | Source |
|---|---|---|
| YouTube Shorts | 3 minutes (square or vertical) | YouTube help centre |
| Instagram Reels | 3 minutes | Instagram announcement, January 2025 |
An accountant records one 45-second vertical clip: “Three receipts freelancers forget to claim”. The hook is on screen in the first second, each receipt gets one shot with a caption, and the same file is posted to TikTok, YouTube Shorts and Reels with a caption written for each.
Reels are short, vertical, full-screen videos on Instagram and Facebook that play with sound and are recommended to people who do not follow the account, as well as to followers.
Watch time is the total amount of time viewers spent watching a video or channel, usually reported in minutes or hours.
Video completion rate is the percentage of views in which a video was watched all the way to the end.
A hook is the opening of a post (the first line of text, the first slide or the first seconds of a video) designed to make people stop scrolling and keep reading or watching.
A safe zone is the part of an image or video frame that stays visible after the app overlays its buttons, captions and profile details.
