What is a pinned post?

Definition: A pinned post is a post you fix to the top of your profile or page so it stays above your newer posts and is the first thing visitors see.

Also called: pinned tweet, pin to profile, featured post

How pinning works

Normally a profile shows posts newest first, so even your best post slides out of view within days. Pinning overrides that order for the posts you choose. Pinning does not create a new post or send it to anyone’s feed again; it only changes what people see when they open your profile.

The rules differ by network. Per Instagram’s help centre, you can pin up to 3 of your posts to the top of your profile. X’s help centre describes pinning one of your posts to the top of your profile page, and a new pin replaces the old one. On a LinkedIn Page, LinkedIn’s help centre says admins can pin one post at a time, notes that pinning is being phased out, and points admins to featured posts instead: a Page super admin can feature up to six posts.

What to pin

Pin what a first-time visitor should see before anything else. Good choices answer “who is this and why should I follow?” or point to the one action you want most.

  • An introduction post: who you are, what you post and for whom.
  • Your best-performing post, as social proof.
  • A current offer, launch or event, removed when it ends.
  • A how-to or resource people keep asking about.

Keep it current

A pinned post from two years ago with an expired offer tells visitors the account is not looked after. Review pins whenever you change a campaign, and at least once a quarter.

Example

A design studio pins three Instagram posts: a short intro to the team, a case study carousel, and its current workshop announcement. When the workshop sells out, it unpins the announcement and pins its most-saved tutorial in its place.
